Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes.

If you're looking for vehicle navigation that's powerful and simple to use, the Garmin StreetPilot c340 is just the ticket. Right out of the box, this unit helps you make the right turns wherever your travels take you. With an easy-to-use touchscreen interface, text-to-speech voice commands, a brilliant display that shows the way with 2D or 3D animations, and a massive points of interest database, the c340 has all the basics covered. Plus, you'll find some great additional features that make it a must-have companion.

Look Mom, no buttons! Garmin has taken simplicity to a new level with the c340.
The c340 is designed with simplicity in mind, although Garmin hasn't forgotten to add a touch of class. With a weight of under ten ounces and a width of 4.4 inches, the c340 is ultracompact and easy to transport. To keep confusion on the road to a minimum, the only buttons are a rotary volume knob and an on/off switch. The bright 3.5-inch-diagonal display features a touchscreen, making it a snap to input routing information and make quick selections on the road. The c340 sports dual integrated speakers for high-quality voice prompts, a USB port for PC connectivity, and an internal lithium-ion battery that provides power when you're planning your routes outside the car (approximately 4-8 hours battery life). In addition to an included 12-volt power adapter for in-car power, there's also an SD memory card expansion slot for use with other Garmin MapSource mapping products. The unit is secured by a suction-mount cradle that fastens to the windshield, allowing for easy portability between vehicles. You can even customize the c340's appearance with optional colored faceplates that suit your style. While the c340 has an internal GPS antenna, it also has an MCX-type connector for hooking up an optional external GPS antenna.

Finding your way with the c340 starts with inputting a location on the touch screen. Next, the unit's text-to-speech feature speaks to you just like a back seat driver, telling you the names of streets and when to turn and in what direction. And if you happen to miss a turn--don't worry, the c340 automatically calculates a new route to your destination. Audible and visual navigation instructions and warnings help you navigate more quickly while keeping your eyes on the road. You can also choose between a 3D mapping perspective or 2D overhead view.

The c340 offers clear, easy-to-read 3D directions.
Another time- and frustration-saving feature of the c340 is the database of preloaded maps and points of interest. Gone are the days of uploading partial maps from your computer to your GPS device: the c340 has them all built in. The unit comes preloaded with Garmin's highly detailed City Select NT street data of the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Finding points of interest along your route is made easy with the c340's huge built-in database of nearly six million hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin has also made it easy for users to upload custom points of interest--now you can add school zones or safety cameras to your database. You can even turn on a proximity alert to notify you of upcoming custom points of interest.

Garmin really kicks the power of the c340 up a notch with the addition of real-time traffic information. This optional service will display congested areas on a color-coded map, allowing you to avoid traffic by simply pushing a button that calculates a new route. All this wizardry is made possible by the new Garmin GTM 10 receiver that connects to the c340 and other select Garmin products. Note that while the GTM 10 receives digital data from specific FM broadcast stations in select major metro areas throughout the United States and Europe, note that these traffic services are available only in select cities where coverage exists. The service requires the GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver and, in some cases, a subscription to enable these traffic capabilities.

What's in the Box
StreetPilot c340 receiver with built-in antenna, dual internal speaker system for voice guidance and alerts, vehicle suction cup mount with 12-24 volt adapter, dashboard disk, USB interface cable, preloaded City Select North America NT database, and quick-reference guide.

Product Description

StreetPilot c340 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, speaks Street Names, including a hefty points of interest (POIs) database with motels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised so far, April 9, 2008
I didn't have a pressing need for a GPS, since I rarely drive in unfamiliar territory. But I decided to get one anyway because (1) I might have occasional use for it and (2) I was suffering from a severe case of gadget lust. Having used an entry-level GPS in a rental car once before, I wanted an affordable model with text-to-speech capability, one that would actually tell me the name of the next street to turn on, instead of saying "turn in 200 feet." This Garmin seemed to fit the bill. But I still didn't want to pay even discounted retail for it, so I shopped online for a refurbished unit and bought one from Amazon.com[...]. I've been very satisfied with the c340's performance to date.

I find that it's very easy to use; the touch-screen directions and menus are simple and intuitive. The directions are good. I've tried it out on routes I'm already familiar with and it has consistently guided me along the quickest routings to my destinations. In addition to the text-to-speech feature, I especially like this model's estimated-time-of-arrival feature. Once you tell it where you want to go, it displays your ETA in a box in the lower-left-hand corner of the map-view screen. The estimated arrival time adjusts continuously through your trip, according to your progress. I've found it to be pretty accurate. I suppose this could be useful if you want to let someone else -- like an anxious relative -- know when to expect you.

My only gripe with the c340 so far is that the instructions that come with it, and even the downloadable online manual, don't clearly explain how to charge its internal battery. When I first got my GPS from Amazon, I tried to turn it on, only to have it immediately turn off. It wouldn't turn on again when I tried a second time. Following the minimalist instructions, I pried the face plate off and pressed a little reset button and tried to turn it on again, with the same frustrating result. Finally, after doing some online research, I figured out that I needed to plug the USB cable that came with the unit into my computer and charge the battery through it. This took about three hours, and the c340 has worked like a charm ever since.

Garmin does not provide an a/c charging adapter with the c340. If you want to be able to charge it from a wall outlet, you have to buy one separately. In normal use, the unit will charge while it's plugged into your car, and supposedly is able to operate on its own for up to eight hours. But for times when the internal battery is low and there's no computer handy, I think the a/c wall charger is a must.

Garmin provides a suction-cup windshield mount for this unit, but the manual notes that it's illegal to use it in California, where I live. Fortunately, I got the dashboard friction mount as well.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is my second one. Bought one in Oct and went to Chico Calif for Thanksgiving. My wife drove out with son and used it from finding lodging to resturants to historical sites. When wife picked me up from Sacramento airport, it was 5pm. half hour we were in Woodland and son asked if we can have chinese food. We stopped and looked at Garmin it told us thaere was one 1 mileaway so we followed directions and found the resturant.

With the second one, I found that using webupdate, I was able to load the latest version and fixes so it's like it was brand new like the first one; only $70 cheaper. On the one we use in a New Beetle, the wind screen mount was not good (too far to reach from driver's position) so I switched to the friction mount ($19 from Amazon). The refurbed one worked great on windshield mount.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Trust Garmin, June 13, 2009
The current price for the C340 is great --- I paid $800 in Jan. 2006. However, buyers beware: Garmin no longer supports this GPS. I wanted to up-date the maps (June 2009). Customer service told me that 1. I had to buy an up-date made for their new line of GPS for $120 (check the current price of the unit) and 2. the up-date would not fit into the memory of the C340. Garmin no longer provided up-dated maps for the Street Pilot. Customer service cheerfully informed me that the solution would be to buy several SD memory cards to which sectional maps of the USA could be downloaded. As I drove from place to place I could insert a new card into the unit. Aside from the inconvenience and awkwardness of carrying a half dozen cards around, their "solution" (I don't think their engineers went to MIT) means that you cannot plot a trip from Washington, DC to Chicago or anywhere else outside the region where you live. I will never buy another Garmin for my car or for my boat. Like Detroit, Garmin has forgotten an important fact: they have competitors and brand loyalty disappears when the customer is stiffed.
