The Perfect Server provides a crash course in excellent customer service for restaurant food servers that is so good I m tempted to buy extra copies to leave as tips in my favorite greasy spoons. Using the Goofus and Gallant approach, two servers (John and Jane) respectively demonstrate impeccable and shoddy service for two sets of customers, while their boss serves as narrator, moderator, and voice of authority asserting that the key to excellent customer service is to execute simple acts with grace and style. The information presented here will be of interest to two audiences: the primary one being food service industry workers, who are here taught clear guidelines in the areas of dress, behavior, and expertise, and the secondary target being diners, who will come to better understand how waitstaff push higher-profit items such as desserts and beverages. The ultimate point made is that happy customers enjoy themselves and often spend more, while unhappy ones cost the restaurant in complimentary meals and bad word-of-mouth.
