5.0 out of 5 stars Online Co-op Makes This Game a Must Have!, March 14, 2008
By Aaron Laine (Sarasota, FL) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This game is way under rated by the other reviews. I bought this game to play online co-op with a buddy over 3,000 miles away. It's blown all my expectations out of the water. Graphics are decent (definitely PS3 appropriate, I don't know where the PS2 comments came from on the other reviews), sound is sweet, and the control is selectable in the options menu (ranging from slow to twitchy). The big thing is this game plays seamlessly as if my buddy and I were in the next room. What other game can boast online co-op in campaign mode and pull it off like Army of Two?

The "bad guy" AI is pretty good, and they advance and make decisions that make this game a good challenge. Previous reviews said the aiming sucks and the enemy doesn't seem to be phased by direct hits...I don't see it. When you start, your main weapon isn't very accurate, and alot of times you're firing from cover, holding your gun over your head. So, of course it's not going to be easy to aim, and with an inaccurate automatic weapon you're not going to hit the guy who's running 30 yards away.

The co-op mode is a blast, and I thought the single player mode wasn't too bad either. The key is that you have to use the communication tools with the AI partner. The in-play training tips help you learn how to get the AI guy to do what you need him to. I found that once I got the hang of it, he was predictable and even saved my [...] on occasion. Without using the communication tools, the AI partner would be worthless, so I'm thinking the previous reviewers didn't use the tools.

My only negative comment is that the game did crash on me once. That should have been caught by the testers. Even with that, for what this game does with online technology, I definitely give it Five Stars!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent split-screen co-op game!, March 20, 2008
By Mitchell M. Tse "mitchelltse" (Antioch, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
As a split-screen co-op campaign TPS, there really is no other game like it! (Okay, Resistance is close, but that's an excellent game as well). Having a choice of primary and secondary weapons (and any game that lets you choose a fully automatic P90 as a "secondary" weapon is definitely giving you a great choice of arsenal!), as well as grenades and special weapons (sniper rifle or RPG as examples), as well as the ability to customize weapons (adding scopes, switching barrels, stocks, ammo clips, adding a grenade launcher as examples), you really do have an excellent range of weapon customizations.

One great aspect of the PS3 version is the use of the Sixaxis controller for the tandem paragliding segments. There are parts of some missions where you're doing tandem paragliding, with one person controlling the parachute using the Sixaxis controller (and here's a problem, the manual never tells you that you're supposed to use the Sixaxis controller's tilt function to control movement, so we smacked the mountain a few times till we figured it out!) and the other person shooting, that's pretty unique to this game (and they recommend using a sniper rifle for that segment, but it's so much more fun using a SAW or AUG on full auto to mow down baddies while you're gliding...)

I'm giving this game 4 stars, because the single player buddie AI can use an improvement (patch?) but as a co-op on the splitscreen, this is a great game for me.

Several other reviewers say that enemy AI is stupid, that they just run up to you. I don't know if they're playing it at easy difficulty, but enemies run up to me as well, but they run shooting and swinging!

There is one departure from realism that I'd like to point out, and I'm actually glad they did it this way: You have a primary weapon, a secondary weapon, a grenade, and a special weapon, and you can pick up ammo, as a primary weapon and as a secondary weapon, as opposed to finding M16 ammo, or AK47 ammo, or P90 ammo, or a S&W ammo, or a M134 minigun ammo, etc. This is a needed abstraction, since there are about a dozen each primary, secondary, and special weapons, and if you were to stick to realism, you'd never find the right ammo on the ground for your equipped weapons (needler ammo, anyone?)

Another thing that may be important to you is that the primary protagonists in the game, Rios and Salem, are mercenaries, and will act like mercenaries. There's a bit of swearing, and there's some other guy out there who's more of a wild-dog than Rios and Salem, with a scene where he gouges someone's eyes and beats their head into the ground. Yes, this game is rated M, just like Halo is, but there's definitely more violence and profanity in Ao2 than Halo, for example. So if you want to play this game as a father/son combo, make sure you debrief them afterwards (it's just a game, you can't shoot your classmates in the back, etc)...

Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars So-so, May 13, 2008
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
I had mixed expectations of this game at first... I was really excited about it because it's one of the few multiplayer games on PS3, but then after reading some bad reviews I was a little apprehensive about buying it. It turns out to be not as great as I expected before I read the reviews (the huge emphasis on co-op play is overrated), but also not as bad as some people described. I played this game with my bf in split screen mode, and we never tried single player, so this review is based on co-op mode with 2 people.

Graphics: Pretty good as long as you have an HDTV and HDMI cable for the system. If not, then it's not so great.

Camera: The camera controls took some getting use to, but once you get use to it they're bearable. I had some trouble with the camera while doing co-op stuff like using riot shield and back to back (but maybe that's just me).

Shooting: The shooting (many people complained that it is nearly useless) is actually not as bad as I expected. It's just that the enemy will keep taking cover and sometimes take blind shots at you, resulting in you not being able to kill him in a few shots.

People who complained a lot of the gameplay and shooting probably played it in single player and had trouble working with the AI. I drew all the aggro while my bf sniped, and when he had the aggro I could aim without being shot at. If you strategize and actually aim you can take enemies down with a few shots assuming you've been upgrading your weapons, but some guys will definitely run up shooting at you and force you to melee.

Co-op stuff: This part of the game is a really good idea, but hugely overrated by the developers...
-There are riot shields, but sometimes I don't bother because when facing a lot of enemies it will break under heavy gunfire and leave you in the middle of the room.

-Back to back shooting isn't something you have a choice in... you can't do it anytime you want, you can only do it when the story allows you to.

-You can step jump your partner up a high wall, etc. but only in certain spots where the option pops up (think the top of that trailer makes a sweet sniping spot? o wait, you can't), and the option usually only pops up when it's part of the story to move onto the next area.

-One really nice co-op feature is the first aid. When your partner goes down you can drag him to safety while he shoots at people, then heal him.

-Weapon swapping.... the only time we ever used this was in the beginning when we had the same guns and he ran out of sniper bullets, but then once we bought new weapons we never used it ever again.

Customization: Again, I think highly overrated.
-You can't customize your armor, only your face mask. There are only 3 different types of body armor that automatically gets upgraded as the game goes on, but none of them really match the different face masks and there is no option to change colors or anything...

-Gun customization is pretty fun, but limited. When I read about the gun customization, I was thinking you can pick your favorite gun and put some insane grenade launcher-type upgrades on it, but some of the guns only have one or two options (sometimes not even improving performance, just appearance).

-You also couldn't see what you can customize on each gun until after you buy it, leading to some "nooo why did I buy that" moments. I just didn't really feel the urge to spend a lot of money on guns that suck compared to the one I was using after I got the most powerful one with the most ammo and accuracy.

-I will admit that being able to "pimp" the guns out was awesome because it increases your aggro (and looks pimp) and I was the bait most of the time :P.

Misc. stuff:
-All the ammo looks the same! The good thing is that the bullets are only specific to they type of gun (primary, secondary, or special weapon) since you can choose from so many different ones. The bad thing is that you sometimes need a certain type of ammo while all your other ammo is full and you pick it up thinking it's the one you need and it's not. Then your partner gets bummed out cuz it's the type of ammo that he needed.

-There are some "Heavy" foes that won't go down with gunfire from the front, so you have to pull aggro and have someone sneak around back and shoot him. These guys were the most fun, especially after I got a rocket launcher for my special weapon and blew him up with one shot from the front :). makes me giggle hehe.

Overall we had fun playing this game, but would never replay it. As a matter of fact, after we beat this game once we traded it in at Gamestop for $22. So bottom line is don't buy it, rent it.
