Editorial Reviews

Review
"'Personal Journals' is a success because it turns the self- examination into poetry and then, harder still, turns the poems into great rap. And as dark as he gets, Francis makes sure we have a good time."
- Chris Dahlen --Pitchfork Media

Product Description
Personal Journals, the debut album from Sage Francis, was originally released on Anticon Records in 2002. Since then, Sage has been on countless national and international tours, released his 1st album for Epitaph Records, "A Healthy Distrust", and started his own record label, Strange Famous Records.

One of the best selling indie-hop records to date, Personal Journals defined a fresh new era for the underground music world. In 2007, Personal Journals fell back into the full ownership of Sage Francis, hence, the re-release of this ground breaking album on his independent label. The re-release of Personal Journals coincides with the release of Sage's new album (Human the Death Dance) on Epitaph Records.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anti hip-hop, October 5, 2008
By RaisedOnSpitalfield "Exit 27 is for lovers" ((South) Medford, Oregon 5-4-1) - See all my reviews
In the interest of full disclosure, I am not a hip-hop fan. I do enjoy some nu-metal, but without the added element of rock, I rarely find rap/hip-hop music enjoyable. Save for one huge exception; Sage Francis.

I'd say about 90 percent of commercial hip-hop deals with strong sexual themes, and a fair amount of "underground" hip-hop does as well. If that alone doesn't discredit any sort of artistic value, the repeated chants of a top 40 chorus, meaningless freestyle-esque wordplay and recycled party beat certainly will. Even so-called indie rappers and groups like atmosphere and aseop rock are guilty of pandering with the above mentioned topics/tactics from time to time, despite the fact that they're often hailed as being "real" or "different" (yah right). Sage Francis, however, IS different. And real.

Personal Journals is a difficult listen, one that'll challenge you from first song to last. Lyrically, it's among one of the most introspective pieces of work I've ever had the pleasure of listening to, "hip-hop" or otherwise. The beats can range from straight-up rap style to all out experimental, and some even transcend genre. It is, for all intents and purposes, a complete album.

I've since done some discovery into the rest of the Sage discography. He's definately had some hits (A Healthy Distrust) and misses (Human The Death Dance) throughout the years, but nothing comes close to the quality of Personal Journals. If you love deep, meaningful music, regardless of genre, you need to own this album. It's the hip-hop masterpiece for the anti hip-hop listener.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable, September 16, 2008
Sage Francis is one of the most talented artists on the scene today. This outing is my favorite rap album, and has been since I purchased it!

Album highlight: "Message Sent"
This song has great flow, lyrics, and delivery! I couldn't ask for a better executed song!
