4.0 out of 5 stars Lenny Kravitz can go to the gap, November 23, 2001

So this is when the Make up moved more into psychedelic territory. There's some funk on here too. The vocals are not as good as on other albums. The packaging is dope. "I heard all about Saturday Night (what about Sunday morning?)" is like a moving ferris wheel ride in a tunnel. "Time Machine" has to be one of the sweetest love songs ever written. "Caught in the Rapture" is a cover, but it is maybe the best song on the whole record. when he sings "I love you, here by me..." he sounds a bit like Gibby Hanes from the Butthole Surfers.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rock'n'Roll Comintern, February 5, 2001
By Jody Biggs (Berkeley, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In Mass Mind (Audio CD)
I must say I've never heard another sound like the Make-Up. It's not something I can just say "hey, it's kind of like <insert other artist name here>" about anyone. For some people this might be a turn-off. You don't want to buy this if you're expecting to hear something that sounds like some other established artist. Don't.

However, for Make-Up fans out there who want to know how this compares to their other albums, it's got a wonderful clear sound to it ("Sound Verite" and "Love! live at Cold Rice" were always tough for me to understand), a stronger 'gospel yeh-yeh' to it, with great lyrics, though perhaps not as intricate as you'll hear on "I Want Some" or "Save Yourself".

Were I to somehow try to rank the albums, I'd have to choose "I Want Some" as the first one to get, for a great spread of the Make-Up's sound and an incredible amount of music, and then I'd have to tie between this one ("In Mass Mind") and "Save Yourself" - both excellent albums, with "Save Yourself" having more fun with the lyrics, and "In Mass Mind" having a beautiful spirit to it, accompanied with amazing musicianship. Ahhh... forget it - just get both of them. Get all of them!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's the Make-up!, October 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: In Mass Mind (Audio CD)
All I can say is the bass on this album has this amazing infectious feeling that makes me want to tear the roof off the house! Of course the vocals are on the money with the falsetto wails, screams, etc. A very entertaining album to say the least. Buy it! Dischord is one of the few out there that overall puts out great music and allows you to buy vinyl/cd's at a reasonable price.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's good but nothing close to James Brown or MC5.
I'm tired of The Make-Up being compared to "Gospel" acts and the MC5. The Lead singer sounds like any other guy trying to impersonate James Brown in his underwear... Read more
