Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The fifth season of CSI: Miami begins with revenge: Lead CSI Horatio Caine (David Caruso) and underwater recovery whiz Eric Delko (Adam Rodriguez) travel to Brazil to avenge the murder of Horatio's wife Marisol (who was Eric's sister). While there, Horatio also helps his sister-in-law and nephew after his brother is murdered by drug lords. (Never mind that the crime-fighting duo seem to have carte blanche to do as they like in a foreign country.) The scenes are beautifully shot and the rhythm of the first few episodes are reminiscent of classic Miami Vice. The most stylistic--and hammy--show in the CSI franchise, CSI: Miami is driven by Caruso's quiet delivery. Never one to get overly excited, Horatio rarely exhibits more than a shy smile or a whispery threat. In this season, two CSIs--Ryan Wolfe (Jonathan Togo) and Natalia Boa Vista (Eva La Rue) face professional and personal problems that could threaten their jobs, while Horatio himself battles a recurring nemesis who always seems to be one step ahead of him. The crimes range from an apparent death by grizzly bear to what looks like an off-shore betting pool dealing with celebrity deaths. After solving the latter case, ballistics expert Calleigh Duquesne (Emily Procter) observes that "Somebody will always think it's easy to make [money]." Taking his classic hands on hips stance, Horatio says, "But we know different, don't we?" Considered smarmy by some, and dreamy by others, Caruso is a love-him-or-hate-him kind of actor. While he doesn't have the depth of William Petersen (star of the original CSI), his preening works in the context of the glitzier CSI: Miami. All 24 episodes, which originally ran during 2006-2007, are included in this six-disc set. Extras include a six-minute look at the actors' wardrobe and a 25-minute documentary hosted by Togo that explores the similarities (and differences) between real and fictional forensic experts. Also, gamers will get a kick out of the CSI: Hard Evidence PC game that comes with the DVD box set. --Jae-Ha Kim

5.0 out of 5 stars CSI: Miami - One of the Greatest TV Shows on Air Today, August 29, 2007
Those who, like me, had the chance to watch at least most of the episodes of this fifth season aired on TV (or occasionally on the web), will probably agree that this season was superb. Like any other shows from the CSI series, the Miami one doesn't really feel like a typical TV Show, but more like a new movie every week or two - but with the same cast.

What hooks me in CSI: Miami is definitely its tropicalesque setting that sets it apart from other CSIs shows, its inventive, smart and curious cases and the graphic production, which is very attractive and well-done.

I also think that Horatio Caine (David Caruso) is the protagonist who gives the show a very distinctive appeal, playing the "super-hero-macho-man" role and, sometimes, overshadowing the other characters. This is another characteristic that makes CSI: Miami unique in comparison to other CSIs shows that don't really have so much focus on just one character. This seems to be so true that the DVD box set cover of this fifth season has only Horatio's close-up and downtown Miami buildings in the background. Can anybody see the rest of the cast? If this is fair, well, that's not up to me.

There's just one thing for sure - CSI: Miami is one of the greatest TV Shows on air today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Horatio is my favorite...., December 4, 2007

The first couple of episodes weren't the best but overall, it is a good series. It kinda looks like they are just putting something together to have a show on a couple of the episodes. That is my only negative. A couple of the old case files came back into the picture and the bad guy comes to justice. I love it when they do that!

Another good season for Miami:CSI!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Sun Is Setting On CSI Miami's Street Cred, April 17, 2008
By S. Francis (Kingwood, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I do enjoy this show and have all the seasons on DVD, but I have to admit Jimmy Park's review is fair and accurate. The lines and direction given to David Caruso are so cringe worthy. For a TV show to be based on something real, it should at least exhibit some reality and believability in order to have credibility. The producers go to so much trouble with lush sets, top notch equipment and other impressive props and yet the writers let us down with banal and ridiculous plots. The 'drive the bomb in the car to a deserted location before it blows' sequence was laughable.

There's ALWAYS a fiber or a fingerprint or some DNA left behind and I'm sure a lot of viewers like me are able to spot who the villain is very early on. Every episode it's the same: murder, the crew turns up (the beautiful people), Horatio delivers his cringe worthy one liner, opening credits, Alex says she'll know more at the "post", one of the beautiful people spots something either on the body or at the scene and says they'll "get it to trace", Horatio drops in from time to time with a "Let's do that" or "Find the gun, find the shooter" or "Find the bomb, find the bomber" line, blah blah blah, a bit of flirting between the beautiful people, an inch or so too much cleavage from Boa Vista and/or Cally and hey presto, Frank Tripp man handles the villain down the steps of the CSI building while Horatio stands in the background looking smug. David Caruso's acting duties may be restricted to putting on/taking off his sunglasses, putting his hands on his hips and nearly always looking down in a hunch back pose, but the guy who plays Tripp, all he does is look annoyed.

One final thought. I've actually seen forensic investigators turn up at a crime scene and they wear these all in one white jump suits, covered footwear (like surgeons do) and face masks. Why? So they don't compromise the scene. That long blonde hair of Cally's must get everywhere at a crime scene, but you never see any of the CSIs bagging and tagging blonde hairs for later DNA analysis only to discover it was one of their own shedding over everything. It's a bit silly.

As I said, I do like this show and am somewhat entertained by it. But as for coming over as realistic and genuinely dramatic, it's become more and more of a let down as the seasons have passed.
