Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Steve Carell rides the wave of 40-Year-Old Virgin stardom (and a biblical flood) in this bizarre, effects-heavy comedy about a modern-day Noah's ark. The film is nominally a sequel to Bruce Almighty, although it bears little relation to the 2003 Jim Carrey hit--except for the divine intervention of Morgan Freeman, who returns in his role as God. Even Carell's character is much altered from his supporting part in the first film; here, Evan Baxter says goodbye to the news-anchoring business in favor of his job as a naive freshman congressman. When God orders him to build an ark and prepare for an impending inundation, Evan sheepishly takes on the task (it's hard to turn down the job when your hair and beard grow to Old Testament lengths and God wants you to walk around in sackcloth).

Carell gets to do silly dances and mix it up with a variety of animals (real and computer-generated), all of which reminds us of the film's family-friendly tone and the PG rating. The kid stuff works just fine, although the religio-environmental message-mongering makes this a most curious kind of Hollywood blockbuster. When the flood comes, the film shifts into a mammoth-sized CGI extravaganza, recalling the era of overstuffed techno-comedies such as 1941 and Howard the Duck (and not to be nit-picky, but the tsunami-like disaster that overtakes Washington, D.C., looks as though it would snuff out the lives of quite a few citizens). Capable comic support comes from John Michael Higgins, Wanda Sykes, and Jonah Hill, with John Goodman and Lauren Graham filling out stock roles of fatcat politico and loyal wife, respectively. Carell is even better at being sincere than being funny, a talent that comes in handy here and bodes well for his future versatility. --Robert Horton

Product Description
Evan Almighty is a comedy for all ages that "you don't want to miss" (Kim Griffis, NBC-TV)!

Everyone's favorite funnyman Steve Carell is at his hilarious best as junior congressman Evan Baxter, whose wish to "change the world" is heard by none other than God (Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman). When God appears with the perplexing request to build an ark, Evan is sure he is losing it. But soon mysterious deliveries of wood and tools are being dropped on his doorstep, animals of every shape and size are flocking to him two by two, and his self-absorbed life goes from overnight success to almighty mess! It's a great time for everyone!

4.0 out of 5 stars Evan Almighty put a delightful twist into established biblical scripture..., September 7, 2007
By E. Villasor "tedi31" (Manila, Philippines) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
With Jim Carrey and Jennifer Aniston both declining to reprise their roles for the sequel to Bruce Almighty. Returning Director Tom Shadyac goes in a different direction by paired up Steve Carell (The 40 Year Old Virgin) with Morgan Freeman. (Both Freeman and Carell are reprising their roles from Bruce Almighty).

Evan Almighty put a delightful twist into established biblical scripture. It was also good to see Shadyac remain true to scripture (With God (Freeman) holding true to his promise never to flood the world again) but at the same time, he allows his audience the opportunity to expand their personal views on the concepts of prayer and making a difference in the lives of others.

God (Freeman) mentioned the following:

"If someone prays for patience, you think God gives them patience? Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient? If he prayed for courage, does God give him courage, or does he give him opportunities to be courageous? If someone prayed for the family to be closer, do you think God zaps them with warm fuzzy feelings, or does he give them opportunities to love each other?"

Lastly, Evan's ARK does play a significant role, other than being the film's signature vessel. A-R-K is the acronym for a single Act of Random Kindness...which is the first step that one must take in order to make a difference in the lives of others.

3.0 out of 5 stars Funny but a bit too silly..., October 16, 2007
By Photogs-Wings (Northern Virginia) - See all my reviews
Steve Carell did a stellar job as the new Noah, and of course Morgan Freeman is an actor with few rivals. We even got to see an un-credited lovely Catherine Bell reprise her roll from Bruce Almighty in the first couple of minutes of the film. I loved the animal chorography, the stunts as well the special effects, all of which are very well done. The dialogue though a little long at times wasn't offensive and for a family oriented light PG rated movie it too wasn't bad. Kids will especially like the animal sequences and there was even a kid's game on the DVD that I purchased. I can see a number of families loading this movie on to their mini van's DVD player for long trips.

Having said what I liked. I did have some big problems with the movie perhaps because I live in the Washington DC Metro/Northern Virginia suburbs. As a consequence I know the area very well. Because of this I found myself thinking of all the millions of people who would be killed if a flood where to come down the Potomac River. This is to say nothing of the trillions of dollars in damages that would be done. Landmarks such as the Capitol itself, the Lincoln, and the Jefferson both of which are on the river or within a couple of blocks of it would be destroyed. To be honest the flood and thinking of the problems makes me think of disaster movies rather than comedies.

Then there is the issue of why would God want Evan to become like our child hood visions of Noah? Why would god want to humiliate Evan with the clothes, hair and beard? Why wouldn't god simply cajole Evan into fighting the evil land use bill that the John Goodman's Character is pushing (the central point of the movie)?

On the lighter side I want to know what short cut Evan uses to get around Washington DC and avoid the traffic. Which is considered by many (including myself) to be some of the worst in the US.

It could be argued that I have taken this movie just a little too seriously. But something about the style of this movie did that with me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Family Film, September 5, 2007
I saw this film with 5 of my friends from varying religious backgrounds and we all loved it! I was worried that it would be shallow and stupid, but, it surprised me with it's warmth. I especially loved the message at the end of the film. The special effects were top-notch and I laughed and found the message of "It's the little things that count" spot on especially in today's world where money and "things" have replaced love and video games "raise children" that are jaded and used to violence by the time they are 11. Evan Almighty "gets it." I wish there were more films like this one.
