Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Steve Carell rides the wave of 40-Year-Old Virgin stardom (and a biblical flood) in this bizarre, effects-heavy comedy about a modern-day Noah's ark. The film is nominally a sequel to Bruce Almighty, although it bears little relation to the 2003 Jim Carrey hit--except for the divine intervention of Morgan Freeman, who returns in his role as God. Even Carell's character is much altered from his supporting part in the first film; here, Evan Baxter says goodbye to the news-anchoring business in favor of his job as a naive freshman congressman. When God orders him to build an ark and prepare for an impending inundation, Evan sheepishly takes on the task (it's hard to turn down the job when your hair and beard grow to Old Testament lengths and God wants you to walk around in sackcloth).

Carell gets to do silly dances and mix it up with a variety of animals (real and computer-generated), all of which reminds us of the film's family-friendly tone and the PG rating. The kid stuff works just fine, although the religio-environmental message-mongering makes this a most curious kind of Hollywood blockbuster. When the flood comes, the film shifts into a mammoth-sized CGI extravaganza, recalling the era of overstuffed techno-comedies such as 1941 and Howard the Duck (and not to be nit-picky, but the tsunami-like disaster that overtakes Washington, D.C., looks as though it would snuff out the lives of quite a few citizens). Capable comic support comes from John Michael Higgins, Wanda Sykes, and Jonah Hill, with John Goodman and Lauren Graham filling out stock roles of fatcat politico and loyal wife, respectively. Carell is even better at being sincere than being funny, a talent that comes in handy here and bodes well for his future versatility. --Robert Horton

Product Description

Evan Almighty is a comedy for all ages that "you don't want to miss" (Kim Griffis, NBC-TV)!

Everyone's favorite funnyman Steve Carell is at his hilarious best as junior congressman Evan Baxter, whose wish to "change the world" is heard by none other than God (Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman). When God appears with the perplexing request to build an ark, Evan is sure he is losing it. But soon mysterious deliveries of wood and tools are being dropped on his doorstep, animals of every shape and size are flocking to him two by two, and his self-absorbed life goes from overnight success to almighty mess! It's a great time for everyone!

2.0 out of 5 stars It's just not funny, December 29, 2007
By nodice (Manchester, Ga United States) - See all my reviews
I like Steve Carell, but this movie was just bad. What made Bruce Almighty work was that the audience could relate to Bruce-a man who had such bad luck that it seemed that the universe was against him until he gets this once in a lifetime opportunity. Who hasn't felt like the universe was against them at some point in their lives? From the moment Evan's journey starts, I can't relate to him and the film makers don't even try to get me to relate. I agree that this was just a strong enviromential campaign run amuck. Do you KNOW how long it took Noah and his family to build the first Ark? But I'm supposed to believe Evan and his small family was able to build one in what-a few months? The laughing public not wondering where the heck animals that shouldn't even be in that region roaming around came from. And I agree with another reviewer-why were they needed if in fact God wasn't going to flood the world and start over? That flood had nothing on Katrina or the Tsunami of '04-so what was up with the animals? I think the series should have stuck with the original concept of another lucky and seeming miserable human getting the opportunity to see what an awesome task of being God for a short period of time and racking up the laughs that way. Why break the formula that worked for you the first time? Steve is a good film comedian and all but his talent was wasted on this. Morgan is good without even trying-but the rest was just a waste of time and money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Family Film, September 5, 2007
I saw this film with 5 of my friends from varying religious backgrounds and we all loved it! I was worried that it would be shallow and stupid, but, it surprised me with it's warmth. I especially loved the message at the end of the film. The special effects were top-notch and I laughed and found the message of "It's the little things that count" spot on especially in today's world where money and "things" have replaced love and video games "raise children" that are jaded and used to violence by the time they are 11. Evan Almighty "gets it." I wish there were more films like this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Family Movie!!, September 3, 2007

I loved this movie, too often there is so much sex or violence that you have nothing to take your kids to that is just fun. People who think it is boring are jaded because no one gets murdered and there is no violence.
I'm in my 50's and I thoroughly enjoyed it, so it's not just for families with children.
