Product Description

Unabridged on 9 CDs in library edition. William Gibson brings listeners Spook Country: The place where we all have landed, few by choice. The place where we are learning to live. Hollis Henry, a journalist on assignment for a magazine that does not exist yet, is just one of the unusual characters in this fun novel. Enjoy great mind candy.

3.0 out of 5 stars great book, disappointing and distracting performance, March 3, 2008

It's hard to know how to rate this in terms of stars, as the book itself is excellent, and the reading is not! I've settled for 3 stars.

I'm a longtime Gibson fan, but this is the first one I've digested via audiobook. I see he's read NEUROMANCER himself, and would be curious to hear it-- I'll bet it's infinitely better than this reader's performance. It's really such a disappointment that I would just stop listening, if it weren't for it being Gibson's story. There are numerous characters who require at least a modicum of accent, and this actor has NO facility in that area. I can see someone being a bit shy of doing Cuban immigrants who have a Russian background, but I only realized one guy was supposed to be British when I heard a stray "cahn't"! Otherwise, plain old middle American. I wonder what William Gibson thinks of it? Even pronunciation of character names is erratic-- surely getting a character's NAME consistent ought to be a basic criterion! Bah.
