The problem with this device is it doesn't tell you if the network is encrypted. A better device is the Canary Wireless Digital Hotspotter, which displays the details of the detected networks. It is more expensive (around $50) but it is more useful.

I just got this device as a Christmas present from a friend and have found it very useful.

For example, on a recent trip to Maui I discovered that the condo I was staying at didn't have in room Internet access. You had to go to the lobby (only open 9-5) and pay 20 cents per minute.

So I took my locator and walked around a local shopping area and found a coffee shop with a hot spot. They had it encrypted so I had to ask them for the code but once entered I had free Internet access and was able to check my email and surf around for as long as I wanted without paying for the access (I DID buy something from the shop -- I'm not adverse to paying a reasonable fee for access, I just don't like being put on a meter at 20 cents per when it costs next to nothing to provide a hot spot).

Also, I found that my favorite restaurant (not in Maui but where I live) had a hot spot they weren't advertising. Now, I hold my meetings there. It works out great but I would have never known had I depended on the restaurant to tell me. (They said they were planning on announcing it but hadn't done it yet).

Anyway, a lot of places now days have hot spots and that's because wireless networking is so cheap and most laptops now days have built in wireless capability. However, many places don't make it public and using this device to find a free hot spot is very worthwhile, especially if you are out of town, need Internet access and don't know where to get it.

This device has paid for itself many times over.

This WiFi signal locator performed even better than I expected. I especially like the directional feature. In some airports (like Ft. Lauderdale) there are plenty of dead spots but this locator allowed me to discreetly find a strong signal area without walking around with my laptop open staring at it.
