4.0 out of 5 stars This Is...The Same Thing - but I still love it, October 10, 2007
By This Is My Alternative (West Babylon, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This album has 13 songs that basically all sound the same.
Said 13 monotonous songs sound pretty much like the songs on the debut (SLIGHT expansion on the sound).
I should be completely bored.
I should hate this.
I don't.
I love it.

Maybe they have subliminal messages embedded behind that monotonous beat. After all, his voice does very much sound like it's trying to brainwash you. It's the only rationale explanation for me liking this so much.

Ok, I'll admit, it's slightly less monotonous than the debut, but compared to other stuff out there, it might as well be one long 56 minute song.

A 56 minute song I can't stop listening to.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars... More of the same but I like the first album better, October 13, 2007
By Paul Allaer (Cincinnati) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
She Wants Revenge released its debut album in January, 2006 and immediately picked up a lot of buzz, with comparisons to Joy Division/early New Order. I really liked the album, regardless of the comparisons, it was an album of mindless fun. Now comes the follow-up album.

"This Is Forever" (13 tracks, 56 min.) doesn't miss a beat and picks up exactly where the first album left off. The sound hasn't changed a bit. After a short instrumental opener, the band crashes in with "Written in Blood", one of the better songs on the album. Another highlight is "What I Want", reminding me of Depeche Mode-era "I Feel You", with a great underlying guitar riff. One of the few departures from the debut album is a 'ballad', "It's Just Begun", a piano driven track, quite nice. That said, the album is extremely wordy, and runs about 10-15 min. too long for its own good. There is no truly outstanding track like "Out of Control" from the first album.

In all, I was a bit disappointed with "This Is Forever". It's not a bad album, but it's not the surprise that the debut album was. I've seen these guys in concert a number of times, and really enjoyed them live. I'll look forward to catching them live again, but if you are new to She Wants Revenge, I'd recommend their debut album over this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid follow up, November 2, 2007
She Wants Revenge's eponymous debut was spectacular. Although the influences were obvious it was an original composition. A release that was the sleeper hit of 2006 and the nearly omitted "Tear You Apart" had a glorious run up the dance and singles charts. The CD had another five or six amazing songs any of which could have charted. Not to mention the B side "Black Liner Run" and hidden track "Killing Time" were catchy enough for "A" side status.

Following up any great work is always difficult. For a band with a unique sound it is even harder. A lot of the reason the first album was so good was that it was the first album. Topping a great debut is nearly impossible. Everyone expects improvement. She Wants Revenge's attempt at that follow up, This Is Forever, is as solid an effort as their debut release. It is better produced and the songs are more of what She Wants Revenge does best. If you enjoyed their self-titled debut release, you'll like this one as well.

Stand out tracks include "Written In Blood", "True Romance", and "She Will Always Be A Broken Girl". I believe "This Is Forever" is a more consistent effort and their sound has refined a bit. The obvious influences are still there; Depeche Mode, The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division and maybe added a touch of Ultravox/Gary Numan/Kraftwerk thrown in. But understand, this is work influenced by these pioneers, not copies of their works. All great music is influenced by great music. And for those of us who wish those bands were still in their prime and churning out the hits (or still alive in some cases), She Wants Revenge is a Godsend.

I'm already looking forward to their third effort and I think that speaks volumes about this one.
