4.0 out of 5 stars Viva La Cobra by Cobra Starship, December 5, 2007
It is an almost given fact of the music industry that when bands are on tour the likelihood of the band doing anything but performing, checking out the new cities and towns that they are in and lounging around in hotels and tour buses is slim to none. The toll that touring takes on a band is one of the main reasons as to why so many bands after a while simply dread touring.

But imagine a band that is able to defy the odds and maintain a full time touring gig while at the same time write new material in hopes of recording another album. That my friends, is musical genius. While touring with the enormously successful band Fall Out Boy, Cobra Starship decided that they would use their spare time in a productive way and turned to writing new songs which are now released on their album Viva La Cobra .

Cobra Starship's latest release is a well crafted album that is masterfully produced by Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy fame. The listener can immediately determine that the album is a professional production and one that focuses as much on putting forth an impressive dance-punk sound as it does proving to the music world that perhaps this genre is growing more and more polished by the day.

Cobra Starship is comprised of Gabe Saporta (vocals), Ryland Blackinton (guitars), Alex Suarez (bass), Nate Novarro (drums) and Victoria Asher (keytar).

The album starts off on the right foot with the track The City Is At War which automatically embraces the dance sound to the album. There is an immediate electronic sound that gets the listener going and the music is as catchy and foot tap inducing as one could hope for. The lyrics of the track sort of set forth what the music of Cobra Starship is all about: perhaps a cynical and slapstick look at the world through their punker glasses.

One Day, Robots Will Cry is a very well done track and the overall feel on this track is perhaps the best testament to what the music of Cobra Starship is all about. The vocals on this track are paired nicely to the music and the track ranges in terms of both speed and sound from time to time, however, the consistency of the album remains an impressively well formed sound. Although the band perhaps is willing to challenge themselves the most musically on this track, the music does not lose the edge that Cobra Starship is hoping to get across throughout the album.

Cobra Starship puts on the proverbial cheerleader outfits on their track Damn You Look Good and I'm Drunk . With a unique introduction that immediately conjures images of the band acting as cheerleaders half in the bag at a high school party, the band craftily chooses to cheer "scandalous" from time to time on the track. The song has an awesome musical conversation toward the end of the track that simply is only done justice when it is listened to by each and every listener. Some creative lyrics such as, "But don't come at me with those lips, sayin' you just want a kiss, 'cause lord only knows where you've been" maintain the continuity of the track's almost adolescent edge.

The album closes out with a shorter track Pleasure Ryland . Though short in length, this song seems to focus largely on the musical instrumentation more than the vocals. Musically, the track winds down with a slower and repetitive musical sound that is skillfully placed where the rest of the album in fact does just that. This track is almost meant to serve not as a reminder of the rest of the album but instead as a farewell from the band to the listener.

Track listing:

1. The City Is At War
2. Guilty Pleasure
3. One Day, Robots Will Cry
4. Kiss My Sass
5. Damn You Look Good and I'm Drunk
6. The World Has Its Shine
7. Smile for the Paparazzi
8. Angie
9. Prostitution Is the World's Oldest Profession
10. My Moves are White
11. Pleasure Ryland

Viva La Cobra was produced by Patrick Stump and was recorded at Mission Sound in Brooklyn, New York. The album is on the Decaydance and Fueled by Ramen record labels.

Viva La Cobra is a unique and interesting album that musically is well produced, well performed and enjoyable to listen to. The album because of its dance-punk undertones simply will not be well liked by several music fans, however, for someone looking to branch out into a different genre of music, this album serves a good purpose. Cobra Starship has produced an album that is not meant to appeal to everyone, but instead, will appeal to their die hard fans in a way that will ensure that their faithful followers will quickly fall in love with this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really a fun album, November 6, 2007
This album is all about having fun, getting on the dance floor, and not caring what people think about you. Whether your into a "club" scene or not there is just so much to move to in this album. It won't change your life, unless you decide that you want to wish away all your problems and dance. A step up from While the City Sleeps, on a fun factor and that's what Cobra Starship is about. Definately recomend! Fangs Up!

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the cover would imply, March 12, 2008
When I saw the cheesy cover for Cobra Starship's followup to the outstanding debut album I got quite worried about the quality of the album. That turned out to be largely unfounded. There are some really great songs on here.

The funk element of their sound is concintrated into 2 of the songs Kiss My Sass and Scandalous, the rest is more tight than the sound from the first album.

I was not overly thrilled with the production quality, the sound is less crisp than I would have liked. Does not sound bad or anything, but it does not pop from the speakers.

Best songs are The City is at War, Guilty Pleasure (best on the album), Angie, and Prostitution. The rest sound good but some are just not my style.

This is a great and really fun band.
