Mark Morris' verison of Tchaikovsky's ballet is a treat that shouldn't be missed. Updated to the 1960's and staged in what can only be discribed as a giant comic book like setting, it brings a new freshness and twist to the classic story. From the machanical Barbi Doll and Robot gifts that are brought by Drosselmeyer, to the G.I. Joes fighting the mice, to the Yule log on the TV screen its a lot of fun add to that Morris' clever and original choreography it is a great way to spend an evening. I don't think this has been shown since its first airing on PBS many years ago, and I'm glad to finally have it on DVD as my tape was almost worn out. Give it a try.

I always loved the Nutcracker and enjoyed watching it on TV when ever it came on PBS. Then I saw this as a teenager and I was totally blown away, same story but done with a very different twist. (how can you go wrong with men in toe shoes?!) And I fell in love, I have been searching for this on DVD and so very happy to see that now I can watch it every holiday

It would just not be Christmas without The Nutcracker Ballet and this is the definitive version for the Baby Boomer and post Baby Boomer generations. With all of the cultural references we can relate to from Barbie to GI Joe. From Television Yule Logs to Snow Ball Christmas Tree Lights. Oh yeah and the dancing is fantastic. Some of my favorites are Drosselmeyer and the Nutcracker Prince's dance, The Snowflakes, Maria's Mother and the Waltz of the Flowers and so many more moments too numerous to mention here. And even a Christmas Party that actually holds your attention all the way through. If you feel safer with the traditional Victorian versions of The Nutcracker we've seen over and over again, then this version might not be for you. But, if you want to start a new Christmas tradition at your house, buy The Hard Nut.
