Ready Mix Records first solo artist album Emotional Content by Stan Kolev is also the first solo album from Stan Kolev, with previous releases such as Gobsmacked and a joint release with DJ Lion entitled Stan Kolev & DJ Lion Foldback I was not sure what to expect from this release. So, here i am, knowing I had to make a review today, as I haven t done one so far this week, I grabbed the new album from Stan Kolev that has been sent in, turned up my new amp and speakers to number 7, I then proceeded to sit back in my chair, coffee in hand, looking out the window at the blue skies and rolling fields, and take in this beautiful aural portrait of soothing, deep, melodic progressive house that warms the cockles of my soul one track at a time. To describe this in a very british way, the album has a lovely, completeness about it, reminiscent of the vibe at renaissance pre 98 with sasha and digweed. The album starts with Routs (Intro Dub) making use of Bulgarian vocal edits blissfully creating the middle eastern vibe that is carried out through the rest of the album. I listen to the album and think, ahh yes, New Beginning that stands out with its melodic grooving sound, then think well actually Get There uses the cut up vocals really well and the jacking bassline makes that stand out, then Substance the way it kicks in from the break, that stands out, then Suspended Memories that could be the track that stands out most with its lush harmonious intro that draws out, without beats, for over 3 mins, then I m thinking the title track, Emotional Content stands out with its relaxed melodic and very cool overall feeling, then I m thinking Flashback with its slightly more active sounding overall feeling with great cut up vocals, then I think Even Flow stands out with its chilled but euphoric eastern chant and old school esq tambourine, then I gave up, normally you buy an album for one or two of the tracks, because they are worth buying the album for, if you use this ethos with the Stan Kolev album your getting about 6 albums for the price of one and not getting the filler tracks as practically every track on this album is worth buying the album for because now I m thinking there is hardly a track on this album that isn t just lush. Stan Kolev s track Gobsmacked has had a fair amount of airing in the Werbisky household but I think this album has a slightly different sound and feeling to Gobsmacked, it is similar in the grooving bassline and chilled, deep progressive sound but if you have heard Gobsmacked or Stan Kolev & DJ Lion Foldback , you shouldn t really judge this album on those previous releases. The album as a whole takes you on a beautiful melodic soothing journey with clever vocal cuts not really ever saying much but adding to the flow and elevating the refreshing sound. In an age where everyone wants to play minimal and call it progressive house, Stan Kolev puts things back into perspective with the timeless sound that is real, deep, progressive house. The accompanying press release states this album is Audibly Delicious and ill agree with that 100% the sound is gorgeous and definitely music for good looking people, if there was ever any such thing . . . . . . hold on, why am I listening to this then ? ;) Nowadays everyone has a label, meaning there is A LOT more tracks to choose from and its also fair to say a lot more decent quality track available to buy, so far this year there have been a couple of stand out albums for me and this is now one of them. You won't understand Stan Kolev from his debut CD. His type of music needs to be heard in a club. Emotional Content is an audio engineer's fantasy: beautiful, ethereal effects; haunting vocals; reverberating synth stabs; plodding beats. It s a gorgeous, sumptuous surface with nothing underneath, the type of music that s easy to dance to, while the spacey synth melodies hypnotize you into a state of complacency. It s perfect for cavernous after-hours clubs, or a sunny terrace in Ibiza. New Beginning, Even Flow, Get There" and "Don't Be" would go down well at Space or Crobar Miami and these clubs sound system would fully realize Kolev s exquisite production. But at home, tiny speakers don't do his work justice. As a result, the CD comes off as boring and formulaic. Listen to Emotional Content in its appropriate place and skip it for something different for your sofa sessions. Robert Near [27-12-2007] --bigshotmag dot com
