Editorial Reviews

Product Description

2007 release of the soundtrack to the Ian Curtis biopic directed by photographer/videographer Anton Corbijn and based on the book Touching From A Distance by Curtis' widow and co-producer of the film, Deborah Curtis. The film stars Sam Reilly in the title role and was first shown at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and received vast critical acclaim. All of the live scenes in the film are performed by the actors, while the American group The Killers contributed a cover of 'Shadowplay'. Music from other bands in the film are original recordings by the original artists, including David Bowie, Roxy Music, Buzzcocks, The Velvet Underground, John Cooper Clarke, Kraftwerk, Supersister and Iggy Pop. The surviving members of Joy Division, now known as New Order, recorded the incidental music for the film and other finishing touches. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad..., November 1, 2007
By Chris (Edmonton, AB Canada) - See all my reviews
The incidental New Order music makes this a must own for NO completists, and the tracks from the movie that can be drawn as Joy Division's biggest influences (Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, Bowie, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk) are great in the mix, even if I happen to own it all already. Chances are if you were a big fan of Joy Division, enough to see the movie, you would be familiar with all the contents of this collection. The cast version of "Transmission" is great; the actors performing the songs are what made
this movie much more fluid and realistic.

Two complaints though:
-The Killers cover of "Shadowplay", while not only pretty underwhelming, is out of place here and should have either been saved for a rumoured covers album (which would be... just bad) or just kept out of the thing entirely. I kind of shuddered when it played over the credits of the movie.
-Not including the cast version of "Isolation", where we see Sam Riley in a recording booth convincingly laying down this Closer track was a great sequence, nipping at the heels of "Transmission". It's a shame it's not on here.

Having a Joy Division greatest hits package would be a great way to get people into the band after seeing the movie, but that is a whole other discussion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Year's best soundtrack, October 6, 2007
By SKOLVK (TUCSON) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Control (Audio CD)
This 17 track soundtrack to Anton Corbijin's Biopic of Ian Curtis and Joy Division is truly a must have for fans of the band or for fans of the "Post Punk" era. The soundtrack is like a mix-tape of classic Joy Division tracks along with songs by New Order, The Buzzcocks, Iggy pop, David Bowie, Kraftwerk, and the Velvet Underground. The members of New Order overlooked the production of the the soundtrack and even contributed to the the score, it seems to have been a labor of love for Ian's old band mates and I think that makes this a very unique and special soundtrack to have. My only complaint is The Killer's cover of "Shadowplay". Nothing against The Killer's, I think they're a good band but their cover just seemed flat and uninspired. Just can't beat the original I guess. The track listing is as follows.

1) Exit-New Order
2)What Goes on-The Velvet Underground
3)Shadowplay -The Killers
4)Boredom-Buzzcocks
5)Dead Souls-Joy Division
6)She Was Naked-Supersister
7)Sister Midnight-Iggy pop
8)Love will tear us apart-Joy Division
9)Hypnosis-New Order
10)Drive in Saturday-David Bowie
11)Evidently Chickentown- John Cooper Clark
12)2HB-Roxy Music
13)Transmission-Joy Division
14)Autobahn-Kraftwerk
15)Atmosphere-Joy Division
16)Warszawa-David Bowie
17)Get Out-New Order

Wonderful Soundtrack. One of the best in a long time. Pick it up!

3.0 out of 5 stars Some wonder, some disappointment, January 7, 2008
By Turner Morgan "turnermorgan" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
One thing that really floored me watching this film was how all of the tracks sounded completely 'new'- as if unheard before. Maybe they'd gotten New Order to do them with the actor doing the lead vocals??

I looked around for the soundtrack and realized, finally, that no- these weren't weird outtakes or something, this was actually the cast performing the track. We do get one track of the cast performing, and we get the New Order incidental music. Otherwise, this replicates something like a dozen tracks that I already own. If I didn't already own them, though, this album would be hugely recommended.
So- 3 stars. And press the rest of the cast versions already, sheesh!
