Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Here is Ron Paul's political manifesto, a courageous book on civil liberties and the rights of Americans that are relentlessly under assault from government. It was written in 1987, on the 200th anniversary of the Constitution, and is back in print for the first time. It is here that Dr. Paul provides his most extended thoughts on what it means to be a constitutionalist in the tradition of Thomas Jefferson. He connects violations of individual rights to an interventionist foreign policy and the supposed needs of national security. Here he blasts the draft and draft registration, impositions on the right of individuals to own guns, restrictions on the freedom to speak and write, and draws out the links between all these policies. Paul further discusses the tie between individual liberties and sound money. When a nation's money is controlled by the people instead of the state, they retain their essential freedoms. But when money is monopolized by government with no tie to a commodity, the state is in a position to ride roughshod over our liberties. Other issues discussed include the true meaning of patriotism, the moral law as it applies to politics, the meaning of leadership in a free society, the nature of the state in light of his experiences in Washington, and the historic and ever-lasting conflict between the individual and the state. 174 pages, 6" x 9", paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A brief introduction to liberty, November 17, 2007
By Seth A. King (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Freedom Under Siege offers the reader a quick glimpse of Dr. Paul's view of the prevailing attitude of the United States towards individual liberty. In it, Ron Paul makes the argument that the philosophical underpinnings of liberty have eroded during the 20th century and only a revamped understanding of natural rights can turn the tide of the increasing totalitarian state. Dr. Paul highlights just a few of the hypocritical dogmas that plague a free society, such as forced military conscription to preserve liberty and the debasement of currency to stimulate economic growth. This book does an excellent job of introducing the reader to some of the foundations of libertarianism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just finished, April 29, 2008
I just finished this one today after reading 'The Revolution: A Manifesto' This was just as good. Written over 20 years ago it gives an excellent example of just how completely consistent Ron Paul is.

If this book had been read by the masses in 1988, many of the problems we face today could have been at the least minimized or quite possibly even fixed by now.

It reads well and is hard to put down until you get to the chapter on economics.

I realized while reading the economics chapter that because the subject is frankly dull, we have for too long ignored it and trusted that others know how to run the economy.

I understand now that they do. They know exactly how to transfer wealth to themselves and keep us in the dark.

I read the whole chapter again, you should too.

If you can only get one book, get 'The Revolution: A Manifesto'. I promise after reading it you will be back to get the rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Paul's book is simply outstanding, March 16, 2008
Anyone familiar with Ron Paul knows that he is a staunch supporter of the Constitution and the rights of the people. Sadly, he is a dying breed in our government. In his book, Freedom Under Siege, he simply destroys arguments for big government and shows how whether you are a Democrat or Republican, you probably have been fooled into supporting unconstitutional policies with little backing historically. What amazes me most is that Dr. Paul's logic and understanding of our nation's history is so complete. If you like reading about controversial topics in America today and need some grounding historically in these areas, such as the Draft or Welfare, then buy this book.
