5.0 out of 5 stars Works well - provides actual ECG trace on your computer, September 29, 2008
By R. Register "rregister" (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've had the ReadMyHeart v2.0 handheld ECG about 2 months now and I'm quite satisfied. I recommend it as a helpful in-the-home heart monitor - but it is certainly no substitue for a hospital's full-blown 12 lead ECG machine.

The prior reviewer, Neil Froemming, states that 'you cannot see a tracing either on the device or using the download software' but this is only half correct: The device itself has a 'pseudo' display, but you can upload your actual trace (via the USB cable provided) to the ReadMyHeart software running on your computer. (Perhaps Mr. Froemming had some kind of computer difficulty, but this process worked easily and flawlessly on my computer.) The trace is easily printed on your PC's printer or can be saved to a jpg image file. A history of past traces (with dates/times/comments) is maintained on your computer, and the data from different individuals can be tracked separately - a nice feature.

The 5 photos shown here on amazon are not misleading - they exactly correspond to what I see on my monitor, manual, cables and software.

As other reviewers have noted, the thumbpads produce a noisy trace (the trace's baseline veers up and down) and I don't trust it (except as an indication of heart rate and beat by beat rhythm spacing). But when using the provided leads (one on each forearm) the results are consistent and not noisy. A single lead ECG trace like this is simply inadequate to diagnose many heart ailments, but it can be helpful for some like arrhythmia.
My cardiologist was quite interested to hear whether the ReadMyHeart indicated any erratic heart rhythm when I was experiencing a minor tightness sensation in my chest.

This is the only home ECG unit I have ever used, but I recommend it for those with a computer who are interested in having a simple, inexpensive ECG heart monitor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well designed and simple to use., March 7, 2008
This monitor is really easy to use, just turn it on, sit in a relaxed position and 25 seconds later the reading of your heart's electrical activity is complete. It is powered by a couple of AA batteries and comes with a USB port to transfer collected data. Download the "Introductory Guide to Identifying ECG Irregularities - Edition 3.0" from manufacturer's website and learn how to get not only lead I but the 12 leads with the cable included with this monitor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Records Modified Lead I ECG, Uses PC/USB to View, December 12, 2008
By Consumer Alert (San Diego, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
I own the ReadMyHeart Handheld ECG Recorder Version 2.0. Note that this is an ECG Recorder (let me emphasize "Recorder") which means that you will need a PC (Windows 98/98SE/2000/XP/Vista) with a USB port to download the ECG data to view the ECG graphs. You cannot view the ECG graphs on the LCD display of the handheld unit, but the LCD will give you the Heart Rate, ST Segment, and QRS Interval. To truely appreciate this tiny device, you need a PC. The device will record up to thirty ECG graphs (15 seconds in duration per graph). Using the thumb pads, you'll get a modified ECG Lead 1 reading. Also included in the kit is an auxiliary electrode cable (for use with gel pads) which will allow you to place the electrodes for measurements analogous to Lead 2, 3, aVR, aVL, aVF, V1-V6. Note that traditional ECG measurement uses 3 electrodes; whereas, this handheld unit uses 2 electrodes, so the waveform is modified to varying degrees from traditional measurement. Nevertheless, the ECG read out from this device is still useful for interpretation. The DailyCare BioMedical website has more information. I bought this device to monitor my family members' hearts. The device meets my expectaions.
