Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The music of Bombadil, a band of North Carolinians who met by chance in Bolivia, draws on a unique melange of influences to create an infectious, unclassifiable sound. They are truly one of the freshest bands to emerge in a long time, with songs that range from straightforward rock to Bolivian waltzes, from heartbreaking, piano-driven laments to swashbuckling, raucous marches. With an array of instrumentation encompassing guitar, piano, harmonica, glockenspiel, and everything in between, their live show is unlike anything else. Still, the core of Bombadil is their anthemic, concrete songwriting. It's what allows them to carry a room, whether there are one hundred instruments on stage or just a single guitar and voice. It's what people connect to and why they keep coming back...

5.0 out of 5 stars "buzz"ing over this band, May 2, 2008
I just saw these guys live today in Knoxville, TN, and picked up the cd while I was there. I agree that you can't plug them into a genre, but no matter. If you enjoy good music, pick this up! It runs from energetic and fun, to sweet and thoughtful. Delightful all around. And most certainly, see them live when you can. (har hum!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Bombadil deserves much more attention., August 22, 2008
I picked up this album on lark since they're local to my area. Boy am I glad I did... what a debut. Heck, what an album! I was listening to the new Fleet Foxes album that is so raved about around the same time as this. Frankly, IMO, Bombadil's debut is much more interesting.

REVIEW:
1. Trip Out West - The piano and lyrics make this sound like a slice of Americana. (7/10)

2. Julian of Norwich - The best way I can describe this amazing pop confection is thusly: a crack-addled-like, joyous, frenetic, Irish-ish ditty that appears to be about a fictional nun named Julian. From the opening verse to the resounding trumpets blast at the end, this song is a real treat. (9/10)

3. Smile When You Kiss- Uptempo song with an edge. It seems to be a morose reflection on life in Western civilization. (7/10)

4. Rosetta Stone - A jangly high-spirited love song. I think it's a love song? No matter, still great. (8/10)

5. Three Saddest Words - A reflective and mellow song about lost love. (7/10)

6. Buzz A Buzz - Understated vocals build tension with complex interweaving of various instruments throughout. Standout drum beats on this track. (8/10)

7. One Two Three - Sweet acoustic tune about loving a girl that does not feel the same way back. (7/10)

8. Cavaliers Har Hum - Another jaunty ditty. The song is for--lack of better words--densely layered. Check out the martial atmosphere complete with fife and drums. HAR HUM! (8/10)

9. Caterpillar Tree (for old time's sake) - A meandering, child-like folk song. (7/10)

10. Johnny - The dark lyrics of this song are interestingly juxtaposed with a bouncing pop sound. (8/10)

11. Get to Getting' On - Folky song about breaking up. (7/10)

FINAL VERDICT: 9.1/10

CHECK IT OUT IF YOU LIKE: The Decemberists, Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes, Annuals

Highly recommended.
