Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
There's a fine line between being funny and being a joke. Thankfully, the debut album from Dethklok, the band at the core of Adult Swim's hit animated series Metalocalypse lands squarely in the former category. Performed by series co-creator Brendon Small (Tommy Blacha is Small's creative partner)--with a lot of help from metal drum legend Gene Hoglan (Death Angel, Strapping Young Lad)--songs such as "Birthday Dethday," "Face Fisted," and "Awaken" tap into the unapologetic musical brutality of death metal, while highlighting the often confusing ambiguity of the genre's lyrics. Progressive taxes ("Detharmonic"), the disappointment and seemingly endless cycle of higher education ("Go Forth and Die"), and the obligatory kiss-off to moist-palmed computer geeks who spew vitriol from the safety of Internet chat rooms ("Fansong"), provide the fodder for Small's hilarious, subtle, intelligent and highly quotable lyrics. Make no mistake: The Dethalbum isn't going to supplant your favorite At the Gates or Slayer recordings, but it will provide hours of amusement and joy--perhaps the very enemy of death metal itself, perhaps the very thing that makes Metalocalypse one of the funniest shows on cartoon TV these days and Dethklok the truest rock band since Spinal Tap. --Jedd Beaudoin

Product Description
Explicit Version. Picture Disc of Metalocalypse: Dethklok's album Dethalbum Collector's Edition. Dethklok, the animated metal group from Cartoon Network's Adult Swim TV show Metalocalypse, unveils a mighty set of monstrous tunes. Masterminded by vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Brandon Small, the fictional ensemble excels at slyly humorous Scandinavian-influenced Deathmetal, as revealed on the fierce, cheekily titled "Bloodrocuted" and "Hatredcopter." A record that pledges allegiance to Metal, even as it mocks the genre's eccentricities, The Dethalbum is sure to inspire listeners to raise their devil signs high in worship of their Dark Master. 15 tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spinal Tap for the next generation , September 29, 2007
By Alex A. Fintonis (Bay City, MI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Dethalbum (Audio CD)

Heavy metal gets animated! That's right all you headbangers, we have the world's first animated heavy metal band. I must say these boys from Dethklok can shred. Well, I should say Mr. Brendon Small, the creator, lyricist, guitar/bass player and vocalist of Dethklok can shred. Brendon Small has definitely created something new in the world of heavy metal, and in my opinion he has done a thrashing good job. Brendon learned to play guitar from Berklee College of music. The guitar work on "The Dethalbum" shows his impressive skill. He is also a comedian. His comical influence shows heavily in the lyrics of Dethklok and mainly in the animated series the "Metalocalypse" which is on adult swim. The songs on this cd are all featured in the series.

Brendon Small has basically made Dethklok a one man band except for the drums which is done by Gene Hoglan, who I believe was in the band Strapping Young Lad. Being basically a one-man band, I doubt we will ever see these songs played live, unless Mr. Small wants to hire a bunch of musicians to go on tour. But I'm sure that's not his intention. Although with how popular this cd is becoming I wouldn't count that idea out.

As far as the music on this album it's not bad at all. In fact I'm quite impressed. I was very skeptical; I figured "oh well how good can music be from a fictional animated metal band be?" The answer is heavy as a freight train. Brendon has created a good tribute to heavy metal with comical edge. I wouldn't necessarily call this album a straight death metal record. Although the vocals are guttural the music is basic heavy metal with many different influences from each metal sub group. But they defiantly have a death metal influence. It's not really thrash, death, black or power metal, but it does have elements of each. If I could give dethklok a label I would call it groove metal because there is so much chugga, chugga, chugga riffs that just kind of groove along, although Small delivers a large amount of blistering guitar solos that would make Glenn Tipton and KK Downing proud. The pleasing aspect about Dethklok to this veteran metal head is Small gives homage to the world of heavy metal with this record. Although he does give it his comical edge which is very entertaining, his humor relates to that of the Spinal Tap in a way but he takes it a step further with the music itself being more extreme and his work almost has a comic book feel to it, well hence the band are animated.

As far as the songs themselves they kind of have a Gwar like feel. This is seen not so much in the music itself but more so in the lyrics. Songs like "Hatredcopter" which is about a guy who flys a gigantic monster that brings vengeance and death to his enemies. Tracks such as "Fansong" are hilarious because it actually makes fun of hardcore 35-year-old fanboys that spend all their money on band merchandise and such and still live in their mom's basement. "The Lost Vikings" is one of my favorites on the record mainly because it has a strong Amon Amarth feel but it has Small's comical edge. Basically it's about a band of Vikings that can't find the battle but the music still has the epic strong Amon Amarth quality. In general that's the whole cd, the music sounds serious but the lyrics are comical. Brendon does seem to have a broad listening preference in heavy metal. In the cd credits he thanks bands such Cannibal Corpse, Arch Enemy, King Diamond, Metallica, Emperor, Exodus, Queen, and the Who. So he definitely admires good music, and this shows in "The Dethalbum"

For me the as good as the music is it still has an extremely clean almost overproduced sound to it, which can be hindering to most forms of heavy metal. The sound of this album can also get a bit bland sounding especially the first half of the cd. But one has to realize that this is basically a sound track to the series Metalocalpse and I don't think is really meant to be a stand alone album. The music itself I would rate about a 3 when compared to other real life extreme metal acts, however the extreme imagination within Small to create these characters, music and voices is very commendable and impressive. He also sounds like a great guitar tech. I would rate his creativity a 5 for an average of 4. This is defiantly worth a listen for any metal head. So go forth be conquered, go forth and buy this album. Dethklok is a good reminder for us metal heads not to take ourselves too seriously all the time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go Forth And Buy! , October 3, 2007
By Mike (Here and There) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Dethalbum (Audio CD)
I still can't get over the fact I got this CD for under $10 before tax.

So I saw that Dethklok was going to release an album. I was like "Well, I like the show, but a CD, is it going to be good?" I was admittedly skeptical. When I found out extreme drumming legend Gene Hoglan was going to play on the album as Pickles the Drummer, I started to think "Hey, this should be interesting." Once I found out Brendon Small was a graduate of Berklee, a world-renown music school, my spirits rose. FYI, Brendon plays on the album as vocalist Nathan Explosion, guitarists Swisgaar Skwigell and Toki Wartooth, and bass guitarist William Murderface; in addition to keyboard parts uncredited to the band members.

Well, then I heard the album and was a believer.

The album is too well written and well composed for music that's supposed to be considered made by a fictitious band. The songs are epic in terms of sound and texture, but aren't really that long. There's plenty of double bass, the solos are better than half of the "real" metal bands in existence, and unexpectedly, this is the first time I think I've ever heard someone sing in a death growl where the lyrics were still intelligible! There isn't a weak moment on the CD.

The only reason I didn't give this album a 5 star review was due to the lack of an up-tempo song. If there would have been at least one song that would have had some blistering speed to it (double bass aside, of course), even if it was 30 seconds long, that would have made this album a perfect metal album. That however may be asking a bit much, considering that even with two dudes doing all the music, this is still one of the better metal albums of 2007.

As for tracks, I do like them all, but if I have to make a recommendation based on what songs stand out among the best, I'd choose Murmaider, Go Into The Water, Go Forth And Die, Fansong, Hatredcopter (which is the only song to feature clean vocals), Thunderhorse, Dethharmonic (featuring Emilie Autumn on violins), and of course, Deththeme (the shows theme song.)

If you're a metal fan, I recommend you get this CD. If you're not a metal fan but do consider yourself a music fan, I still recommend you get this CD. While I hold the musical aspect of this album true to metal's roots, this is the most accessible metal album I've heard in some time and in a fashion similar to late 80's - early 90's Metallica, is capable of delivering songs even the most mainstream music fan can get into, regardless of genre preference.

I hope Dethklok considers touring like the Gorillaz. That would be amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awaken!, November 20, 2007
By Pecos Bill (Gaithersburg, MD United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Dethalbum (MP3 Download)
Awesome album. You know, I've always sort of loved, shall we call it, "death metal", but only for the music. The problem I have with metal is that it usually takes itself too seriously. The music is awesome but the lyrics usually leave me in a state of, "wtf?"

Dethklok is awesome metal music with lyrics that don't take it seriously and (once you manage to interpret them) are actually pretty funny.

The Lost Vikings, for example, is a tale of a group of men who ride out to battle without a map, get lost and are too proud to ask for directions, choosing to simply ride around randomly and if anyone asks them about it they lie and say they're riding around on purpose.

Murmaider is a tale of caution about what might happen if you attempt to murder mermaids.

Everything about this music is hard core metal except the lyrics and that's why it works so well for me.

I was so glad when I saw they had added this to Amazon's MP3 download section. It's well worth it. I hope they add the rare bonus CD as well (which has the Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle). Offer me that and I'll buy it, too.
