Toshiba Portege - Wonderful, October 5, 2008
Very solidly built, great looks, styling and function, and inline with my high expectations of previous Toshiba products I have owned. Would like to see this Toshibs and a dark gray.
Two comments or glitches, pay attention to typing. Sometimes the cursor finds its way to a place you don't want it, and causes some rework. 2nd-the speaker is weak sounding, but sort of expected for such a small package. 2 thumbs up on this product, and very much worth the money.

R500 - light and easy, August 15, 2008
What a relief - light, easy to use , quick start up, long battery life. If you are on the go or have to carry a laptop frequently the R-500 is as good as it gets.

Expectations Met. I love such a premium product at such a good value., March 21, 2009
Although Refurbished, product is not defective. No visible blemishes but the keypad's surface actually is a sticker pasted over it and was pasted a little off mark the keypad's intended mark obviously. I think shipping would definitely not affected this so i believe its the Quality Check of Toshiba's factory But definitely 5 star laptop. I love the weight, it's extremely light. even the battery itself seems to feel heavier than the laptop itself, if you separately hold both!
The screen is matte surface which I need because I will be using it outdoors but viewing angle is really limited, which is not a big problem for me.
Keypad is responsive in the centre, but if brushed from the sides, takes a short moment for response. not a big problem for me.
no recovery cds/dvds came with it although if you order directly from TigerDirect, they list the recovery discs came with the laptop. However you can create your own recovery cds/dvds using the built in recovery disc creator program.
keyboard doesn't flex under normal typing pressure. screen can be bent or it shows flex if applied pressure from the sides but take good care of it by using both hands to open the screen and it should be good, or use one hand and open from the middle and you wont be flexing the screen.
The biggest thing you could probably complain is the noise from DVD-super multi, or the heat generated from the left side, where the hard disk is located. the laptop became quite warm that it can be uncomfortable. Now while this should be an issue, but it is perfectly fine with me because first of all, in order to achieve the weight and sturdiness of the chassis, Toshiba had used magnesium alloy, stronger and more beautiful than plastic, weaker but cheaper than the expensive carbon fibre. For this compactness and size and weight that was achieved due to the material used, i really understand the heat issue. So get a heatsink notebook base with fan to maintain the laptop and battery life. better still, use it in air conditioned room.
