Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The long-running series Avatar the Last Airbender comes to a dazzling conclusion in Book 3 Fire, Volume 4. Poised for quite a number of episodes (seen in previous volumes) to go to war against the tyrannical Fire Nation, Aang the young Avatar and his cohorts must now bring down the Fire Lord and his army, or watch them ramp up their destructive powers during an imminent solar eclipse. But there's a lingering question only Aang can answer: can the Avatar, who has never killed anyone, bring himself to take the Fire Lord's life? That is what he must do, according to Zuko, the Fire Prince who has thrown in his lot with Aang and the latter's friends.

While Aang is sorting that out--receiving various wisdoms from past Avatars and advice from a giant turtle-lion creature--Zuko and Katara take another leg of the battle by confronting Zuko's crazed sister. Meanwhile, Sokka re-asserts his latent talent for commanding dangerous missions as he and earth-bender Toph attempt to sabotage Fire Nation airships. The final episodes on this disc are thrilling, in no small part because they have been so long in arriving. Before those, however, there are a couple of interesting chapters to get through, including "The Southern Raiders," in which Katara attempts to exact revenge for the disappearance of her mother. As always, there's some comic relief, in this case "The Ember Island Players," in which our heroes experience the ignominy of watching some of their previous adventures become a ridiculous, staged play. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent completion to the series!, July 20, 2008
This disk contains these final 6 episodes of the final season:

Chapter 16: The Southern Raiders - Prince Zuko and Katara take off on a private mission, to find the killer of Katara and Sokka's mother.

Chapter 17: The Ember Island Players - Prince Zuko takes the gang to his family island resort where they watch a theater representation of their history.

Chapter 18: Sozin's Comet Part 1: The Phoenix King - "Team Avatar" (Sokka's pet name for the group) prepares for a confrontation with the Fire Lord while Ozai assigns Azula a special honorable title - and crowns himself Supreme Ruler - with his own special title.

Chapter 19: Sozin's Comet Part 2: The Old Masters - Aang sets out alone to decide how to deal with the Fire Lord while the rest of the group set out to find Uncle Iroh.

Chapter 20: Sozin's Comet Part 3: Into the Inferno - Zuko and Katara pair up to face Azula in the Fire Nation, while Sokka, Zuki and Toph team up to stop Lord Ozai and his army from destroying the Earth Kingdom.

Chapter 21: Sozin's Comet Part 4: Avatar Aang - The Grande Finale, including Aang's final confrontation with the Fire Lord and Zuko's with his sister.

While I found Chapter 17 mostly missable, the final four chapters (18-21) run together like a full-length movie! All loose ends (that I could think of) get tied up nicely, including the fates of all the main and secondary characters.

An excellent way to end the entire series!

3.0 out of 5 stars So this series has come to an end..., August 31, 2008
Many things were off the hook, especially Aang's battle with Ozai. That was filled with so much pwnage.

There were several things in this DVD that were one-star for me. Mind you, this is a commentary only on the episodes this DVD, not the rest of the series.

- The ending with the kisses. Ruined it for me, really. There should have been no kissing, it just added kitschiness to the whole ending.

- Plot inconsistencies within the last few episodes (Ember Island Players, Southern Raiders) It feels to me that the writers simply weren't paying attention and didn't care to tighten up the plot.

- Many questions left unanswered. The fate of Ursa? Long Feng? The Earth King? The White Lotus? Chit Sang? Teo? Again, it feels like the writers got sloppy. Tsk tsk...

Other than that, the eps were decent. Good animation, and plot holes aside, there were humorous/memorable moments. So overall, when you add the good stuff and bad stuff, this gets 3/5 stars. I really wish the writers had been more attentive and careful though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true masterpiece, July 24, 2008
Let me start off by saying that I am 29 years old and I love this show. I started off watching it with my 5 year old son who is now 8 and I love it. This is truly one of the best animated series I have ever watched. This dvd finally gives us the ending we all hoped for. It wraps everything up perfectly. We finally find out if Aang can indeed save the world. I hate to see the show end. I just hope that M Night Shylaman does the live action movie justice. If you are a die hard Avatar fan the way I am then this dvd is a must have they definetely saved the best for last!
