1.0 out of 5 stars Too expensive for not much performance, November 23, 2008

I hated the look of this compared to a real ringflash. The catch light (reflection in the model's eyes) was very ugly-it's a u shape and not round (and also too small). Using this device with any background other than a wall or backdrop just yields shots that look like a normal flash shot.

Considering that this is not really a flash or a light, but just a plastic adapter, and that you can get a real ringflash for not much more, the price on the Ray Flash is way too high. For say $100. it might be worth it as a toy to have in your bag for occasional use, but at $300., no way.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'll admit, I got it for free., July 16, 2009

I won the RayFlash via Scott Bourne on his twitter give aways (google it), so I'll say say that first off. I didn't pay for this, but I do own one.

I'll tag my photos on flickr that i've used the RayFlash to create and link it here @ a later time. However, for Macro, I can shoot at low apertures and still get very good shutter speeds in almost any situation with very even lighting. Also great for portaits in certain situations.

This is very loose on a Nikon SB-600 however, it will fit on an 800 or 900 very well (reason it's a 4 instead of a 5).

If you're looking for a ringflash, and don't want to make your own .. AND you already own your own strobe. This is for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars it has its uses, July 15, 2009
By Dan Milham (Slidell, La) - See all my reviews
For close portrait shooting in a fluid situation this ring flash will give you a nicely diffused light. It will cost you a stop or 1.5 stops so you'll want to adjust accordingly. It feels a little rickety and looks strange but works fairly well.
