4.0 out of 5 stars Always consistent., October 1, 2008
By peterhoof (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This CD, which includes all new songs except for one cover, will make listeners just feel good.
Each track has a lively tone to it and has instruments like keyboards and alto and tenor saxophones that will gladden any fan of smooth jazz.
The legendary Fusion keyboard player returns with a typically polished set of good time grooves like "Come On Up" and "Don't Stop".
Following on from the success of his last set '{He Had A Hat", "Heard That" maintains the high standard with cuts like "Heard That", co-written with sax player Eric Darius, "You Got Something" and the vocal "Take Control" catching the ear.
"Rehab" is a pleasant cover of the Amy Winehouse hit, but it is the overall feel of this set that is impressive.
The album, supported by a rhythm section of Alex Al and Lil John Roberts plus a strong guest list including Gerald Albright, Rick Braun and Paul Jackson Jr., is produced by Jeff Lorber and long time friend, veteran keyboardist Rex Rideout.
Witty drums play by Dave Weckl add some bass tone to the whole.
He inundates himself with expert players and vocalists, which only add to his genius and succeed in making you feel so relaxed that all your cares just melt away with each stanza.
The album proves that Jeff Lorber wears the jazz chapeau very well.

5.0 out of 5 stars SmoothJazz.com Review, October 1, 2008
By Sandy Shore (Monterey, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Heard That (MP3 Download)
Composer/producer/keyboard legend/elder statesman for Smooth Jazz Jeff Lorber has done it again! His Peak album debut HEARD THAT is, as expected, absolutely stellar. The first radio single sets a torrid pace for the rest of the set, with its bluesy, old-school funk treatment of Amy Winehouse's Grammy-winning hit "Rehab." It'll remind you of the vibe on Ramsey Lewis' "In Crowd." On HEARD THAT, Jeff returns to his fusion-funk roots after the more jazz-oriented HE HAD A HAT album from 2007, and ensures the groove by collaborating with legendary pop, R&B producer Rex Rideout. HEARD THAT is amply infused with a pop, jazz, R&B, and Blues flavor, and naturally has that classic Lorber signature taste of 80's Fusion sound running through it all. Jeff acknowledges that "Jazz thrives on being a collaborative medium," and including players like Rick Braun, Paul Jackson, Jr. and Gerald Albright as sidemen doesn't hurt either! So what's Jeff Lorber's secret to his success and longevity? He answers, "My work ethic and the time I spend focusing on writing... I'm open to inspiration and ideas 24 hours a day." And that's exactly why we get awesome projects like HEARD THAT with every new Jeff Lorber release! ~SCOTT O'BRIEN

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Smooth
This CD actually is too smooth or should I say too lame and too weak. Good thing is Rehab made it jazzy and rhythmic otherwise don't buy this.
