Product Description

Amazon.com

The Rise of Cobra is not your grandfather's G.I. Joe. It's more like C.G.I. Joe with explosive special-effects action sequences that provide the film with a surplus of "Boom Boom Pow" (to quote the Black Eyed Peas song that drives the end credits). This blast from the summer past is very much like the metal-munching nano-mite missiles a (literally) mad Doctor (Joseph Gordon-Levitt cashing in some of his indie cred) and McCullen, a Scottish weapons dealer (Christopher Eccleston), threaten to unleash upon the world. It never stops. Ever. The original G.I. Joe action figure was an all-American hero. These Joes are--all together now--"the best of the best," an elite multi-national squad. Two soldiers, Duke (a buff Channing Tatum), an "on the ground, in the fight" kind of guy, and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans), his wisecracking best friend, are rescued by the Joes after they are ambushed while transporting the missiles. These are no ordinary Joes. Snake-Eyes (Ray Park) is a silent ninja, Stella (Rachel Nichols) a bodacious brainiac, Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) the imposing weapons specialist, and Breaker (Said Taghamaoui) the techie. They are led by gruff Gen. Hawk (Dennis Quaid), who barks out lines like, "When all else fails, we don't," with polish. Duke and Ripcord are recruited to join the classified unit after Duke discovers that Ana (Sienna Miller), his former fiancée, is in cahoots with McCullen and now sports the sinister moniker the Baroness, not to mention killer cleavage-enhancing latex outfits. This being the first in a budding franchise, there is much backstory to cover. Flashbacks date back to 1641! But the order of the day is underground military command centers, underwater evil lairs, gleaming high-tech weaponry, breakneck chases, and cool gadgets, such as a speed-accelerating hydraulic suit. It's enough to make you want to dust off your original Hasbro action figures or, the studio no doubt hopes, buy the new ones. --Donald Liebenson

Yesterday, I received my 2 disc edition of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and I looked over the sleeve and it looked nice and got me all excited, reminded me of the G.I. Joe days of when I was a kid watching the cartoon! Then, I later last night put the second disc in to check out the extras! HA that was a joke! The only extras on this 2 disc is the making of the movie, and the special effects behind the scenes thing. Now granted those were cool, but the only real reason for the second disc is for the digital copy! I honestly think this movie is not worth [...] at all, maybe 16.99! Big deal you get the digital copy! How many of us out there really use the digital copy? Where was the deleted and alternate scenes? Is it really coming to the point where things are going to Blu Ray and not to regular dvd which their are a heck of a lot more dvd player owners then blu ray! I say if you are looking at this review on deciding whether to purchase the 2 disc, wait till it goes cheaper and get it! Don't spend over 10 bucks for it! Thanks for your time I hope this helps!

4.0 out of 5 stars It Didn't Suck, and I Thought it Would, September 1, 2009
My husband and I saw this movie tonight on a whim, both of us remembering watching the cartoon from the 1980's. Now I wasn't expecting any fantastic acting or OMG fabulous writing, I went to be entertained and I was very entertained by this movie. I liked the Scarlett/Ripcord dynamic, something that has turned out to be somewhat controversial. This is due to the fact that in the cartoon Scarlett was always paired with Duke and with Snake Eyes in the comic. However, the two actors had chemistry, so I liked it.

There were two things however that I had issues with. The first being Cover Girl, she was my fave joe during my childhood and she was a TANKER not an admin/desk jockey. Also, you have no idea that it's her until the end credits roll around. It would have been nice to know that I had been looking at Cover Girl, instead of wondering if she was in the film. I heard that Lady J was in the movie as well, but I'll be damned if I could find her, if she was in it, like Cover Girl, they never come out and say it. They just assume that you are psychic and automaticlly know.

The second is Tatum Channing. Dear G-d, that man cannot act, at all, not even a little bit. Considering that he mostly plays off of Marlon Wayns and Sienna Miller, two people who can act... well it becomes painfully and pitifully obvious that he is out of his league. Which is REALLY sad to say, considering that this movie is pure escapist, action fluff! While he has the look of Duke for the most part, the man couldn't act his way out of a paper bag if someone held the end open for him.

Lastly, Breaker is a REAL treat. I found myself wanting more scenes with him and eagerly anticipating his lines. Hopefully he'll get more of them in the sequel, which is already in development and which all the actors are under contract to be in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, November 7, 2009
I had low expectations of the film after hearing some of the many disappointments. But to my surprise, I found it very entertaining. It was a fun and had great martial arts sequences, good action scenes and a nice sense of humor to it. The story line for an action flick kept me attentive as well. The plot moved along well and didn't feel like there were any slow moments. I wasn't comparing it too hard to the original cartoon because it's a different time now and artists can have some creative liberty. It was still fun to see some of the old familiar characters. Great job with Snake Eyes. Overall, good entertainment.
