Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
What if the Montagues and Capulets had lived in The O.C.? Or that lissome young cast could be beamed back to fair Verona? The result might look a wee bit like Virgin Territory a period Italian adventure-romance, starring two very contemporarily gorgeous young stars, Mischa Barton and Hayden Christensen. The film is a pastiche of adventure, romance, action, comedy, period drama, and mistaken identity, set in medieval Italy against the backdrop of the black plague(!). Spirits are mostly high, however, as young Lorenzo (Christensen), Pampinea (Barton) and their cohorts frolic in the countryside, away from the nasty disease, amid mistaken identities, family honor, and as much wild flirtation as 14th century Italy would tolerate. Which, it turns out, is quite a bit. Barton and Christensen look a bit out of place in their heavy period costumes, but they are lovely enough--and have enough chemistry--to make their longing love story feel true. Lorenzo has been bewitched by a kiss he received blindfolded, and has pledge his heart to that lady. "I have a love," he tells Pampinea--and holds her, pining, at arm's length. Tim Roth has a grand time in a supporting role, twirling an invisible mustache and wreaking havoc in town and countryside alike. Most of his lines are too raunchy to be quoted here, but it's enough to know his fiendish comic delivery is impeccable. Fans of films like The Princess Bride--and of course, The O.C.--will love getting lost in the lush beauty of Virgin Territory. --A.T. Hurley

Product Description
Hayden Christensen of Jumper stars as charming scoundrel Lorenzo di Lamberti who can – and does – deflower any woman he wants in 14th century Florence. But the only maiden that truly sets his heart ablaze is the sexy beauty Pampinea (Mischa Barton of The O.C.) who is also being pursued by an obsessed Russian count (Mathew Rhys of Brothers & Sisters) and a psycho nobleman (Academy Award® nominee Tim Roth) who has vowed to take her virtue. In a time when lust is contagious, can trickery become the ultimate act of seduction? Christopher Egan (Eragon) co-stars in this sexy action-comedy where one kiss may unlock a world of pleasure and anything can happen when you’re in Virgin Territory.

4.0 out of 5 stars Part Shakespeare, part Monty Python, September 2, 2008

This is something like a Shakesperian comedy, only with humor that's a little more raunchy. It takes place in Italy around the 17th century (or so) and focuses in on a sort of Don Juan character who is always on the run (played by Hayden Christensen). He finds sanctuary from the hoodlums who are chasing him by scamming his way into being the gardner of a convent. One can already imagine the mischief a lady's man is bound to cause amongst a slew of virgin(?) nuns!

Of course, as you've already guessed by now, there is a certain woman (played by Mischa Barton) whom he desires above all else. Only problem is, she's betrothed to, not one, but two(!) other men. Oh, what's a playboy to do!?

As the title indicates, there is some gratuitous nudity in the film. However, I actually thought there would be much more than there was, especially as they were constantly discussing the topic of intercourse. Sadly, Mischa Barton does not remove her shirt, but she still manages to steal the show. I look forward to seeing more movies with this stunning beauty!

If you enjoy British comedy, this film will likely be right up your alley. If you want to take a chance on a charming Romantic comedy based in a long-ago era, this film might be just the thing.

2.0 out of 5 stars It Might Be A Good Idea To Leave This "Virgin" Untouched, September 2, 2008
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Truth be told, I certainly wasn't expecting great art in a movie entitled "Virgin Territory." But I had an open mind. I had hoped for something light and silly, and indeed this film is light and silly--it just isn't particularly fun. A misguided effort to tell a Casanova story, "Virgin" is a period piece that owes as much to "Porky's" as it does to any swashbuckling epic. Add some bizarre Monty Python-esque moments, copious nudity and implied sex, and a strange narration by a superfluous character--and this movie completely baffled me. Romantic comedy or teen sex romp--"Virgin" is both and neither.

The film stars Hayden Christensen playing a charming lothario who seems to be absolutely irresistible. When faced with a gaggle of beautiful young nuns, he doesn't even have to work at bedding the entire convent. Every woman throws herself at poor Christensen. Needless to say, those of a more devout nature might not appreciate this movie. Christensen doesn't really overcome the deficiencies of the script. Seeing him in this straight to DVD clunker, I had to ask--"What happened to the promising star of 'Life as a House' and `Shattered Glass'?" Even Tim Roth, who adds class to any endeavor, can't elevate this film.

It's easy to find fault with "Virgin Territory," but I think the film's biggest issue is that it fails to connect with a target audience. Too infantile for a serious audience, it also misses other key demographics. Young guys that might enjoy the nudity are likely to be put off by silly romantic subplots. And those more interested in the story are likely to wonder just what there is to really care about. Those interested in the comedy might chuckle once or twice, but it's hardly a gut-buster. Mostly, though, viewers are likely to be disinterested. I know I was. KGHarris, 09/08.

2.0 out of 5 stars A good idea gone bad, December 2, 2008
By Jem (MD, USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I selected this DVD because I like Hayden Christensen and I wanted to see him in sexy medieval leather wielding a sword. Not all direct-to-DVD films are bad, but this one just proves why they get a bad rap. Sadly, even in those tight pants, Christensen couldn't salvage this mess.

The premise sounded like "The Princess Bride" without the fantasy elements, a romantic comedy. Only, this movie really needed some Rodents of Unusual Size or screeching eels to liven it up. Those that think the dialog in the Star Wars movies is wooden should see this. I don't think it's the fault of the actors, they weren't given much to work with. The plot is so thin, everyone fell right through.

The narrator, rather than a charming grandfather trying to engage his grandson in a love story, is a starving artist who took over the church he was painting when the real priest died of the plague. Lorenzo (Christensen) is a rake breaking hearts across the city. Pampinea (Barton) is a young noble fending off the unwelcome advances of a nefarious duke/noble/something. He's the villain - you know because he kindly dresses himself and all his lackeys in black. Oh, and he wants to kill Lorenzo. Lorenzo hides out in a convent full of horny, beautiful young nuns who fall over themselves to have sex with him. Pampinea ends up hiding there as well, only he doesn't know it's her. You see a lot of gratuitous nudity here (hence the R rating), but never the two stars. Everyone ends up down the road at Pampinea's villa. Evil villain fights Lorenzo and loses, everyone gets their true love. Blah.

The movie was VERY slow, and so boring at times that I found myself fast-forwarding. The creators tried to inject humor into the story, but it always felt forced. Pampinea's girlfriends are captured on the way to the villa and end up examining a line of penises and finding them so different from man to man. Eh. There was way too much of the villain, who spent all his time blustering, and the film couldn't decide if it was going for slapstick comedy or sarcastic wit. It didn't succeed at either.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone but die-hard fans of the actors. And they should probably rent it first.
