Editorial Reviews

Product Description

"The audio equivalent of an Edgar Allen Poe compendium, ranging from the darkly beautiful to stark bleakness." -- Dusted

Bass Communion is a project dedicated to Steven Wilson's recordings in the ambient, drone, and/or electronic veins. Most of the pieces are experiments in texture made from processing recordings of real instruments and field recordings. The atmosphere of the music tends towards the dark and melancholic, but is expressed with an almost Zen-like beauty. Recently, Wilson has started working with a guitar and laptop configuration, and the first material in this style is contained on this album. Bass Communion has released several CDs, LPs, and singles, many of them issued in handmade or limited editions (which sell out very quickly). The most recent release was the super-low end Pacific Codex, which contained just one 40-minute piece issued in a limited edition of 975 copies packaged in a deluxe box containing a CD, DVD-A, and a book.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Question Is Why?, February 24, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this because it was recommended to me here on amazon as a Steve Wilson solo album. It is not. Rather it is another "effort", if you could call it that, of his ambient drone project Bass Communion. I have accidentally bought some lousy albums in the past, but Molotov and Haze has to rank as one of the worst.
It has great artwork and is well-packaged, but the music within stretches the definition of the word. Two of the four pieces , Glacial and Haze, might actually be OK as the background music in a documentary about something mysterious but the other two are just a hellish din that could have been useful in "torturing" terrorists held at Gitmo.
The big question surrounding this album is "why?". Unless you relish the prospect of listening to just under an hour's worth of relentless noise, avoid this. Fans of Bass Communion may say that I just don't get and they would be right. I don't.

4.0 out of 5 stars another facet of stephen wilson's talent, August 22, 2009

(REAL NAME)
So the other reviewer doesn't like ambient music and is upset he bought this. This is great ambient music but it is not Porcupine Tree or any of S. Wilson's other bands.
