Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Japanese pressing of the 2008 album from the Swedish rockers features one bonus track: 'Saved By The Bell' (Piano Version). Recorded during 90 days and nights in Polar and Big Island Sound studios in Stockholm with producer Jacob Hellner [Rammstein, Apocalyptica], Backyard Babies' self-titled sixth album features highlights such as the sleazed-out, scuzzed-up Rock of lead single 'Drool' to no-nonsense album-opener 'F*ck Off And Die', from the punk-ed-up 'Zoe Is A Weirdo' to the self-explanatory 'Back On The Juice', and from the Pistols-esque 'The Ship' to the part-acoustic instant classic of 'Abandon'. This is the Backyard Babies at their very best. Victor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't delay - buy this, September 19, 2008
By Kevin Blake (Surrey, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Backyard Babies (Audio CD)
Arguably Backyard Babies' most consistently excellent release since Total 13, though they've never done a bad album, just one or two that maybe aren't quite as brilliant as the others. Sweden's finest and certainly most enduring band with an unchanged lineup going back over a decade now despite not achieving the large scale success they deserve, but as we all know there's no justice in the music biz.

For those of you not clued in, the Babies make melodic, sleazy hard rock with a punky edge in the vein of Appetite era G'n'R. I picked this CD up at the band's recent gig at Barfly in London and they pulled much of the set from the new album. While I'd never advocate dropping such classics as UFO Romeo, accommodating the new songs proved a wise move as FOAD, Degenerated, Idiots, Nomadic, and especially Come Undone are all superb and rock like muddafuggas. The latter is the pick of the bunch on this album -- catchy and uptempo and kickass, vintage Babies. Nicke even emerged for the encore to play his folky solo Saved By The Bell, featuring a lilting melody that makes the song work despite being a departure from the norm.

Dregen sings more lead on this album than on previous ones, but that's no bad thing as it mixes it up more with Nicke's trademark excellent raspy voice (he's never sounded more like Social Distortion's Mike Ness than on the Stonesy Back On The Juice, by the way). And while Dregen is no shredder, his guitar work remains as inspired as ever, always enhancing the songs and never lapsing into self-indulgence.

While a few of the songs aren't quite as immediate as the aforementioned ones, this album is a real grower and I found that a few spins of the whole thing while out and about in my car had me rapidly grooving to it all. There really isn't a bum track on it, although honourable mention must go to Zoe Is A Weirdo for the Ramonesy title alone. It's also another fine blast of Babies punk 'n' roll.

Backyard Babies produce consistently great albums and are a top live band. Long may they continue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Babies, August 19, 2008
By Steven Swan (Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Backyard Babies (Audio CD)
This to me is probably the best collection of songs they have put out.
Pure guitar driven, catchy, hard rock.

I can't put anyone today ahead of them at this point, they are without a doubt my fav band from the past 10, 15...maybe 20 years, and it's been about 20 years they have been together, but since about 1998 when they came back they to me have gotten better and better, and this may be their best. I've read where they have said that this is their most focused and cohesive effort to date, not in those exact words, but they seem to be clicking on all cylinders to put it in simple termed perhaps.
A veteran band seemingly still in their prime.

Favs include many, "F Off And Die" was the first song I heard off here, and so solid rockers like "Degenerated", "Voodooo Love Bow", "Come Undone", "Zoe Is A Weirdo", and "Where Were You?" are up there along with "Nomadic", and "Back On The Juice". "Idiots", and "The Ship" are decent also.

"Abandon" is a song I like okay, but to me it sounds too much like either Lifehouse or the Goo Goo Dolls (or both).

"Drool" and "Saved By The Bell" are my 2 least fav tracks here, just can't get into either one after repeated listens.

Favs in order:
1. Degenerated
2. F Off And Die
3. Voodoo Love Bow
4. Come Undone
5. Zoe Is A Weirdo
6. Nomadic
7. Where Were You?
8. Back On The Juice
9. Idiots
10. The Ship
11. Abandon
12. Drool
13. Saved By The Bell

The Deluxe Edition comes with a CD-Rom containing the video (which is excelllent) of F Off And Die.
