Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
There is no It’s a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street to be found among the four titles that comprise this Warner Brothers Classic Holiday Collection, Vol. 2, but there’s still plenty here to placate most everyone’s inner Grinch. Although the actual holiday season for the most part plays only a passing role, certain elements recur: for instance, two encompass post-World War II hardships, two are fact-based, and two are shameless heartstring-tuggers dealing with the plight of orphans. In chronological order, they are:

Blossoms in the Dust (1941): A radiant Greer Garson stars in the exaggerated but real-life tale of Edna Gladney, "a great woman" who did "great work… for humanity." Born spoiled and rich, Gladney married happily (husband Sam is played by Walter Pidgeon) but suffered a skein of hardships--the suicide of her adopted sister, the death of her son (leaving Gladney barren) and husband, bankruptcy--before becoming a tireless advocate for homeless and unwanted "foundlings"; she even managed to get the state of Texas to remove "illegitimate" as a legal designation for the kids. Stereotypes abound--Gladney is a saint, while those who oppose her are flint-hearted, puritanical stiffs--but hey, we’re talking orphans here, so get out your handkerchiefs. It Happened on 5th Avenue (1947): A frothy, overlong concoction about a motley group (including a noble hobo and some down-on-their-luck servicemen and their families) who occupy the New York mansion belonging to "the second richest man in the world" while the owner is spending the winter in Virginia. Many complications ensue--the rich guy’s daughter comes home but doesn’t reveal who she is; then dad himself, a real estate tycoon, shows up as well--but all ends predictably as love blooms and tightwads learn to savor the gift of giving. Holiday Affair (1949): Probably the best of the lot, not so much for its storytelling (which is again fairly pat and predictable) but due to the star power of Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh. She’s a war widow with a young son and a well-meaning but safe and boring suitor; he’s a confident, would-be boat builder who sees right through her many hangups, and, after pages of glib, snappy repartee… well, take a guess. All Mine to Give (1957): Cameron Mitchell and Glynis Johns in a "fact-based" story about husband and wife Scottish immigrants who settle in Wisconsin in the1850s. The kids soon start popping out--six of them, in fact. But we know hard times are coming too, and sure enough, when double-barreled tragedy strikes, the eldest of the children, who’s all of 12, must find new homes for himself and his siblings--on Christmas Day! Yes, it’s unabashedly manipulative, but if this doesn’t get you, you should immediately change your name to Scrooge. --Sam Graham

5.0 out of 5 stars The second of two holiday collections from WHV, July 26, 2008

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
Of the four films in this collection, only "Blossoms in the Dust" will not be available as a single DVD. The following is the press release.

All Mine To Give (1957)
A touching drama, All Mine To Give tells the sad story of six pioneer children who struggle to stay together on Christmas Day following the deaths of their parents. It stars Patty McCormack and Glynnis Johns along with Ellen Corby. This is perhaps one of the saddest movies I've ever seen, and I can remember the first time I saw it 40 years ago when I was 10.

Holiday Affair (1949)
This classic Christmas romantic comedy stars Janet Leigh as a poor young widow torn between a boring successful businessman and a romantic ne'er-do-well. Robert Mitchum and Wendell Corey co-star. I'm sure you can figure out which actor plays which man. This movie is very mature and realistic. Nobody is all bad or all good in this film.

It Happened on 5th Avenue (1947)
This screwball comedy is about a hobo and friends who move into a mansion while the owners are out of town for their Christmas holiday. The film was directed by Roy Del Ruth and stars Don DeFore and Ann Harding.

Blossoms in the Dust (1941)
Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon star in this true story of Edna Gladney, a woman who devoted her life to finding homes for unwanted infants. Felix Bressart co-stars. Directed by Mervyn LeRoy. This film is good, but doesn't tell anywhere close to the true story of Edna Gladney. She didn't need all of the family melodrama portrayed in the film to motivate her, and she was a real force in the care of children in Fort Worth,Tx. throughout her life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Collection, January 20, 2009
I love the movies from the 30's and 40's; I really only ordered this because I wanted Blossom's in the Dust, and because I had seen and enjoyed the original Holiday Affair (I like the recent version with David James and Cynthia Gibb as well); But I enjoy all the movies, and found that "It Happened on 5th Ave" is a wonderful movie, and one that I will enjoy over and over!!! As far as the "Holiday" collection - if there is a meaning or message, I don't wait for the holidays to enjoy them, I watch them all year round!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection, January 7, 2009
This is a great collection of 4 great old movies. I was looking for Holiday Affair & it was just released in this collection this season. Great collection of 4 movies that aren't "out there" as much. Highly recommended.
