I don't know if K3 is a "love 'em or hate 'em" girl group, but for me the instant I encountered Karen Damen, Kristel Verbeke, and Kathleen Aerts I was smitten, major league big time. The fact that I don't understand Flemish is immaterial.

The idea that K3 is an act that is intended for kiddie consumption seems somewhat odd to me. What I'm hearing is expertly produced Pop music, much of it sprinkled the same magic pixie dust that Elvis Costello once used to describe ABBA.

Studio 100 has franchised K3 in Germany, and now they're attempting to do the same in England, but if there's one thing I realized early on in my appreciation of K3, it's the ladies who make it work. Kathleen's bright, clear voice, Kristel's smooth flowing sound, and Karen's slightly husky tones blend so beautifully. But there's more to it than their sound. They're smart and savvy and often very funny. Not since the Monkees has a manufactured group risen to such unexpected heights.

Sure, there are some uninspired tracks, but the best of the best of 'em --such as "Kissing Day", "Lost Heart", "Tele Romeo" and "A Trip to Mars" -- reside in the light and airy realm of Pop music perfection.

But sadly, it's over. Kathleen quit K3 on March 23, 2009. She will probably appear one last time at Studio 100's Summer Festival in Holland, and then the magic pixie dust will be no more.

It's possible that Karen and Kristel can carry on as K2, or they'll replace Kathleen, but it's very rare for a personnel change like this to work as well as the original team. As I like to joke, without David Lee Roth, Van Halen was only lukewarm for teacher.
