Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Commitment can be a scary concept, especially when it means "forever and ever." When Open Season concluded, Boog the bear and the domesticated dog Mr. Weenie had run off into the woods to join the wild animals and buck Elliot had become smitten with doe Giselle. Open Season 2 opens with a nervous Elliot and a beaming Giselle about to take their wedding nuptials, while Mr. Weenie is being enticed back to captivity by a trail of dog biscuits. Rationalizing that he's a good friend above all else, Elliot leaves Giselle at the altar and sets out to save Mr. Weenie. Boog, McSquizzy, Buddy, and the rest of the forest gang join Elliot on his quest, followed by Giselle who quickly proves invaluable to the team. New characters Roberto, Fifi, and a host of other domestic pets try to convince Mr. Weenie that sacrificing some freedom is a small price to pay for being loved, but in the end only Mr. Weenie can decide which is the right world for him. Likewise, Elliot must decide whether marriage entails more commitment than he can handle. Open Season 2 has some funny moments, but the plot is fairly weak and it's just not as good as the first movie. The kids that previewed the film found it entertaining, but preferred the original Open Season, and most parents will probably be just as happy skipping Open Season 2. Bonus features include 14-minutes of voice talent interview footage (with mostly new voice talent since few actors returned for this second film), 5 fairly basic DVD games, and a "how to draw" Boog, Elliot, and Fifi tutorial. There are also 3 storyboarded deleted scenes and Baha Men's "Who Let the Dogs Out" music video. (Ages 3 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Product Description

Boog and Elliot are back for more crazy adventures. After falling head over hooves in love with Giselle, Elliot's road to the altar takes a slight detour when Mr. Weenie is kidnapped by a group of pampered pets determined to return him to his owners. Boog, Elliot, McSquizzy, Buddy and the rest of ?the woodland creatures launch a full-scale rescue mission for their sausage-shaped friend and soon find themselves in enemy camp: the world of the pets. Led by a toy poodle named Fifi, the pets do not plan to let Mr. Weenie go without a fight. Can a toy poodle REALLY bring down an 900-pound grizzly bear? Will Elliot ever marry Giselle? Find out in Open Season 2.

2.0 out of 5 stars I am sure it will entertain some kids, but....., January 24, 2009
This review is from: Open Season 2 [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I had high hopes for this one as animation can look so pristine in BD, but I was in for a shock. Sony Animation was behind this, but it had the whole Cartoon Network look to it instead. The main voice talents from the first film did not come over, nor did any of the writing/production staff (and it shows).

The story is just ok, entailing friends helping and rescuing each other with plenty of adventure and rabbit abuse. One of the main characters is a dachshund so apparently the "wiener" humor is what passes for hilarity these days. While it has been playing in the store kids of all ages are entranced by it but the parents haven't been thrilled with the parts they have seen. The "..that lady pulled my wiener.." and "..my beautiful rack.." lines raise a few parent's eyebrows so it hasn't exactly been a hit like I had hoped.

The BD supplements are painful, including "deleted scenes" which were hand sketched and not worth the time. The "Weenie Arcade" has a horribly spliced "Who Let the Dogs Out" video by the Baha Men, a how to draw the animals tutorial, and a featurette about the faces behind the voices.

I loved Hoodwinked, even with that style of animation, and OS2 looks similar in nature (no pun meant) but is much less of a quality film. I have read where people say this an ideal family film, which nothing really offends me so I would watch it with my kids, but needless to say I lost a few rentals playing it in the store. And for a BD, not one of the memorable ones.

1.0 out of 5 stars Laugh Count, February 24, 2009
Aside from the trite story line and really cheap animation the real reason for watching this animation was going to be it's anticipated hilarious humor. So here's the humor count: Half chuckle 10 minutes into movie; another half chuckle around 23 and again 45 minutes. Fell asleep between 23 and 45 so there may be more. Story was resolved at about 65 minutes and the final 20 minutes was pointless filler. Suggestion: Stop at Open Season 1 if you want to be left with fond memories.

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Letdown, August 4, 2009
I love the first one but this one was a major letdown. Unfortunately, my sister loves it so I have to watch it all the time. Recommendation: DO NOT BUY THIS UNLESS LOOKING FOR A WAY TO GET YOURSELF TO TURN THE TV OFF!!!!
