Editorial Reviews

Product Description

"Songs you need to download now! Army Navy `Saints': a splashy jangle of distorted guitars and winsomely defiant vocals--like Teenage Fanclub's Bandwagonesque all jacked up on Mountain Dew--that's the feel-good nonhit of the winter." -- SPIN "Army Navy follow in a direct line from The Zombies to Teenage Fanclub, with brief detours for The Posies, Redd Kross, My Bloody Valentine, Blur, and the like, layering heavy, distorted guitars, pounding rhythms and oh-so-sad and sweet vocal melancholy into rock and roll bliss." -- Other Music

The music of Army Navy is best described as impeccably crafted melody over blankets of guitar fuzz that create a delicate balance between melancholy and joyful resignation. For inspiration, the band looks to groups from the past like Teenage Fanclub, The Smiths, The Posies, and The Libertines while still keeping a firm eye on the future. Aided in the studio by producer Adam Lasus (whose previous credits include Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Helium, and Yo La Tengo), the band eschewed the major label process to release its eponymous debut in the US under its own label, The Fever Zone, in the Fall 2008. With a firm lineup, an explosive live show, and a fair smattering of internet and magazine press, the band is beginning to attract a steady following in their adopted hometown of Los Angeles. They've shared the stage with such acts as The Arctic Monkeys, Wolfmother, and Teenage Fanclub, and have recorded an exclusive song to be on the soundtrack of the new Michael Cera movie Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. The band's advice to fans of indie pop everywhere can be echoed by a review in Pitchfork, which urges people to "catch a whiff of Army Navy's sweet jangle."

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly Enjoyable Indie Pop Debut, October 27, 2008
By RadioNDN "RadioNDN" (Midwestern USA) - See all my reviews

The full length debut from Los Angeles based band Army Navy sounds like a happy collision between the Monkees, Teenage Fanclub, Nick Lowe, Marshall Crenshaw and the Housemartins. The slightly noirish album cover, showing a phone booth in the dark, belies the sunny music inside, which is full of soaring melodies, jangly guitars and breezy harmonizing. I'm not sure listeners will necessarily find anything radically new or groundbreaking here among the 12 tracks included here, but it's otherwise difficult to find fault with a set of music so filled with infectious melodies and so highly enjoyable. Standout cuts: "Dark As Days," "Saints," "Unresponsive Ears" and "Ignite."

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Year's Best!, June 16, 2009
By John D. Pride (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The often-overlooked musical genre that we call power pop has always maintained a steady stream of top-notch purveyors, thanks to the likes of Tommy Keene, Myracle Brah, Fountains of Wayne, Cheap Trick, Guided By Voices (when Robert Pollard's not going all prog-rock on us), The Well Wishers and others. Whooshing in like a breath of fresh air out of Los Angeles, Army Navy wields high the jangly, melodic and uber-catchy power pop banner that was long-ago established by West Coast bands like The Quick, 20/20, Paul Collin' Beat and The Three O'Clock, who Army Navy reminds me of at times. Along with Tommy Keene's newest "In The Late Bright", Army Navy is among the year's best releases thus far and a top contender for the year's most enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Cd, June 26, 2009
I love this CD. I've had it since February and its been the best album I've heard all year. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because theres a few songs I skip. But other than that the songs are very catchy. I also downloaded from Itunes Life of Lies. Its a bonus track not found on this album but I recommend you check it out.

This is a great CD. I've been listening to it over and over and I continue to find new things I like about it. The vocals are tight and the lyrics are fun. Read more
