These are all Buddhist prayer beads from Korea. It was the Buddhist monks in China that help spread the drinking of tea and those same Buddhist monks were wearing these types of prayer beads. These beads are made from fragrant cedar and the Chinese Characters (traditionally used Chinese in Korea) inscribed into each bead mean: "Where You Place Your Will, There You Will Achieve." Beads are 8mm.

A Mala is a string of rosary beads used in the Buddhist tradition to count sutra recitations, or merely as a physical reminder to practice constant mindfulness. Full Mslas have 108 beads, with or without tassels or engravings depending on the tradition represented. Smaller Malas have beads numbered by some divisor of 108.

Wrist Malas are popular as an adornment. They can be made of woods such as cedar or semiprecious or precious stones made globular. They can either be strung on a leather thong or on an elastic band which slips comfortably and snugly over the hand and lower arm.

A simple wrist Mala such as this is an unobtrusive symbol for the dedicated practitioner to use in the course of daily living.
