5.0 out of 5 stars Certainly a Cut above the rest., December 4, 2008
Without a doubt, this NAS / Media Storage server is above the rest of the crowd out there. For the price, it packs in a good set of features. This is not your usual NAS, - the functionality on Mvixbox is difficult to explain till you actually see it working. Some really cool things like torrent client, ability to SSH directly into the core, built in drag-drop upload-download tool, seamless compatibility with Windows and Mac - with a explorer like interface for transferring files over the network. The user admin menu is intuitive. Really designed for a not-so-tech crowd. Configuration takes about 5 minutes and you are up and running almost immediately.

One of the coolest features is the rapidbox feature which makes it easy to share large files via a simple URL. All one has to do is select a file and "share it with a friend"... the friend will receive an email with a LINK. He / she can click on the link and download the file directly from the mvixbox over the internet. Now, thats what I call an intelligent design concept. Very Well executed and works flawlessly. It really makes it easy for me in my design business... as I dont have to use FTP servers anymore and the hassle of uploading files to the server and then sending FTP links to clients etc. This has made life really easy. The same works for my client. I send them a link and they click on that link and upload it to my mvixbox.

I know we can also use it to host a website. I have never done that. Will probably update this review once I try that feature out. For now, I am liking this fat boy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect NAS / Media Server - Functionalities Galore!, December 24, 2008
This is my purchase of the year... and it has performed exactly as described. One solid piece of NAS device oozing with features. Honestly, it has so many interesting features that I havent been able to try all of it out - even though I've had it for nearly 2 weeks now! Setup couldn't be any easier. Getting it up and running took, literally, less then 10 minutes.

First, I have no clue what the other reviewers are talking about ... I have installed a 2 x 1.0TB Western Digital HDDs and they work flawlessly. No Problem at all. I bought it directly from the Mvix and couldnt be happier with their service. After using for a week or so, I SSH'ed into the unit and tried messing around with the core and broke it. Contacted Mvix tech Support and got the new latest build of the firmware within a few minutes from them, installed and was back in shape. Was very impressed with their helpful attitude.

The only gripe is that the boot-time is sluggish - but since it is a NAS and not a desktop - I am not booting it everyday - so I can live with it. Hopefully future firmware upgrades will take care of this issue.

On thing to remember about MvixBOX is that this is a SMB or Home Server. It is not meant to replace your high-end, 2k, Industrial-strength server. I was really surprised at just how whisper quiet the drive is while in full operational mode. Currently I am running a RAID 1 setup across my HDD. I just moved my entire personal website and the web-family-album of the entire family to this server. With a 20/5 FIOS pipe running into my house... I dont think I want to pay $100 for hosting fees anymore. Having a Gigabit port on the Mvixbox - makes it large file transfers blazing fast across my home network. I have moved all my itunes library and ISO movies from my desktop to this storage and will be streaming it across all rooms.

Another cool feature about this device is the ability to share media files via simple URLs. I just started using it and I am amazed at this intelligent design. Its almost like after you use a thumb(flash) drive.. you wonder how you were living without it earlier. Just this feature puts it way above the rest.

Overall, I think this is a very well designed NAS with a comprehensive set of features. Simple to use. Most of the stuff is pre-configured for you (if you dont know how a linux server works). Supports expandable mirroring, integrates well with Linux and Mac computers - what else can you ask for?
