5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY, AFTER OVER 10 YEARS OF DVD'S IN THE MARKET..., December 5, 2008
As much as I can not wait for this to be finally released on DVD in the U.S.A., I will be somewhat sad that it is only a standard DVD, not the expected 25th Anniversary 2-disc edition. This film is a milestone to American cinema in the same vein as other classics that may not be as deserving but get the luxury DVD treatment regardless (in particular, a lot of Criterion collection titles that get an excellent DVD edition, even if the movies might just be curiosity items).

I hope that this edition is just a warm-up, and that a more inclusive edition with lots of behind-the-scenes shorts, commentaries and documentaries (like the one shown on TV back in 1983 about the making of the movie) will be released not far from now.

Still, how FANTASTIC that we are finally getting YENTL on DVD. Oh, how I like the way YENTL makes me feel.

Yentl, available on DVD for the first time February 3rd from MGM Home
Entertainment and timed to the films 25th Anniversary. Starring

Were), Golden Globe® nominee** Mandy Patinkin ("Chicago Hope," The

Napolin and Isaac Bashevis Singer's original short story "Yentl, the

Talmud - the primary source of Jewish religion law - dies, she faces a
life of female drudgery with no hope of continuing her studies.
Frustrated by her feminine destiny, feisty Yentl transforms herself
into looking like a boy, renames herself Anshel, and heads for the
nearest Talmudic academy where she hopes to pass as a male student.
There she falls in love with fellow student Avigdor (Patinkin), who in
turn is in love with Hadass (Irving). After numerous complications
ensue, Yentl, determined to get what she wants, leaves Europe for
America to pursue her dream of serious study without needing to hide
her identity as a woman.
