Great for giving yourself the shivers, August 23, 2009
I am very surprised that there is only one review on this book, and even more shocked that the review itself is a critical one. Yes, there is a bit of horror in Coraline, but to me this made it deliciously creepy. And it is not your typical "dark and stormy night" creepiness either. Coraline is very unique, a sort of mixture of science fiction and mystery that blends together perfectly to create a great story, the perfect book for nighttime reading.

Coraline, December 18, 2009
Have you ever wish for a different life? Or have you ever thought life was unfair? Well, Coraline Jones did. A young girl named Coraline has a huge imagination, and is bored with her new house and her busy parents. The only thing that interests her is the mysterious door that is bricked shut. One night Coraline heard noises and found that the door had opened and the bricks weren't there. The door leads into a world of excitement with talking animals, delicious food, and other parents. But is this world to good to be true?
In that life your problems will fade away with nicer, caring parents, delicious food, entertaining toys, and anything you could ever dream of. Yet in this marvelous world you still miss your other life with your real family and friends and want to go back. But what would happen if it's too late to return to your true life? Would you fight to go back or just give up? In the book Coraline, by Neil Gaiman, Coraline Jones faces these questions and many other problems in hope to go back to her real life and save her parents.
The main plot of the story follows a young girl with a huge imagination named Coraline Jones. Coraline finds herself bored with her view house and her parents who are too busy to talk to her. The only thing that interests her is a small, mysterious door that opens to a brick wall. Then one night Coraline heard noises that lead her to that same door but, it was unlocked and the bricks had disappeared. The door lead into a world of excitement with talking animals, delicious food, and other parents who talk and care for her unlike her real parents. Coraline then starts to get scared when her other parents pressure her to stay forever with them by sewing buttons on to her eyes. When she questions if she should or not the other mother gets angry with her so she steals her real parents and rides them. In hope of freedom, Coraline offers to play a game to save the lost souls', her parents, and herself. Will Coraline win or lose the game?
This book is for all ages who love adventure, fantasy and suspense. It shows adventure when she travels into the other world in search of her parents and when she has to play a game to win them back. The suspense comes in when the reader wonders if Coraline will get her life and parents back or stay in the other world forever. This book is very unique and hasn't read anything like it before.
I think that the book Coraline is a lot like many Tim Burton films. I think they are a like because they both give off a creepy, mystical, and interesting vibe. They are both very bizarre though too. This book was made into a movie too, which is a Tim Burton film. If you enjoyed the movie, you will like the book. The only thing that might disappoint you is you don't get the crazy exciting colorful visuals that the movie gives you.
Something I love about the book, Coraline, is how the author paints a picture for you. An example of the author's descriptive writing is, "It wasn't the kind of rain you could go out in - it was the other kind, the kind that threw itself down the sky and splashed where it landed ... turning the garden into a muddy wet soup. Also it has a wide range of interesting personalities of the characters. One of the most interesting characters is the black cat who can talk. He is mysterious who seems to know everything about the other world. The only down side to the book is it is a little bizarre and confusing at points.
It's bizarre because you might think the idea of walking through a door going into another world is weird and unrealistic. It can also be confusing on how Coraline got into a certain place because there is no transition when a character is going place to place.
Overall this book is a great easy read full of adventure. I really enjoyed it. Read this mystical and exciting book and see for yourself.

Fantastically Creepy!, November 6, 2009
Loved this book. I have always adored fairy tales and this one was very creepy. Picked it up and couldn't put it down until I was finished with the book.
