Gameplay
At heart GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra is an old-school 3D shooter with a fast-paced arcade feel. The game elaborates on the storyline that drives the major motion picture of the same name, but is not bound by it. This means that along with many of the characters that make an appearance in the movie, you can also expect to see additional faces and references from the franchise. Players choose from 12 playable Joe characters, including Snake Eyes, Duke, Gung Ho and Heavy Duty, each with his own combat specialty, weapons of choice, and special enhanced abilities. Each character falls under one of three classes: heavy, combat soldier or commando. It's the players task to pick the character with the skills that best suits the combat situation at hand. Through these characters players will also have access to a variety of vehicles, some not seen since much earlier days in the franchises history.

As players battle across levels, eradicating Cobra units as they go, they will take damage as well as accumulate points. But as they pass through danger they will automatically regenerate health points, so simply staying alive pays a certain amount of dividends. With actual victory in engagements though they will also fill their "ability meter." This meter when completely full allows characters to unleash for a short time, their current character's unique special ability on an enemy. They may also bank this ability to gain access to the "Accelerator Suit," which related to the movie storyline, provides invincibility for a limited time as well as a different arsenal of weapons.

Local Co-op Multiplayer
Along with a robust single player campaign, players can also choose to engage Cobra with a friend in the game's local cooperative game mode. As in the single player mode, within this players battle their way across levels, clearing as many Cobra members out of their path as they go using the variety of weapons, vehicles and skills at their command. The beauty of the mode is that although you are working together towards a goal, you are also earning individual points, which in a way makes for a joint cooperative and competitive endeavor.

Plenty of Unlockables
The Rise of Cobra features a variety of unlockables in a variety of areas that keep its arcade-style action fresh. Just a few of these include four unlockable Cobra bosses, which add to the replayability of the game; more than 70 file cards which hold the vital stats for Joe and Cobra characters seen in the game; and even several public service announcements (PSAs) featuring footage from the original GI Joe cartoon.

Key Features

3.0 out of 5 stars reasonably fun arcade-style, run & gun shooter..., August 10, 2009
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
i'm freely admit i'm a GI JOE fanboy, so keep that in mind when reading this review.

i really didn't know what to expect from this game. trailers aren't always indicative of actual gameplay and the videogame community seemed bound and determined to hate this game before it was even released and without even playing it, but i took a chance and bought it anyway. what can i say, i'm a fanboy.

i finished the campaign last night and here are my thoughts:

the good:

1) it's GI JOE!
2) there's a decent mix of old [duke, scarlett, snake eyes, heavy duty, ripcord, shipwreck/parrot] and new [sgt. flash, kamakura] characters, including one character built just for the game [agent helix]. i would have preferred a line up of classic joes, but the inclusion of the newer joes by no means lessens the game. and being able to play the cobra characters is fun, too [firefly, destro, baroness]. kind of fun to play the baroness and scarlett side-by-side.
3) each joe's special moves are pretty fun. i was fond of scarlett's homing arrows and beach head's motion-detected, homing mines. they're both very effective against the enemy. other's were less interesting, but fun all the same.
4) the 3rd person co-op mode is a lot more fun than COD's split screen.
5) the boss battles are challenging, but not inordinately so.
6) there are plenty of trophies to be won, even if most are pretty easy to achieve.
7) some have complained about the graphics -- but the story more embraces the cartoon than the larry hama-penned comics. i didn't have any problems with the graphics. they were suitable, colorful and fun.
8) i liked the storm shadow-trained red ninjas. kind of corny, but kind of cool.
9) good nostalgia factor.
10) buy it on amazon and you can unlock scarlett's classic uni.
11) accelerator suit mode!

the not-so-good:

1) the voice acting is horrendous. i mean truly bad. if it were so-bad-it's-good, i'd be ok with it, but it's not. the 'jokes' are lame. the characters flat. the dialogue is equally bad.
2) the player has no control over the camera. there were a few times i had no idea what i was shooting at until i took the most circuitious rout down a hallway just to find out. no good.
3) it's fairly short [but does offer some decent replay value]. there are three environments, six missions in each.
4) price point -- it's WAY overpriced for what you get. if you want to buy it, wait a few months until the price drops to $19.99 or buy it used.
5) somewhat repetitive game play. this is a classic shooter, nothing more, nothing less. the developers could have spent a bit more time and come up with some a more clever storyline, or more engaging missions, but like i said, it's a straight up duck & cover, run & gun shooter.
6) scarlett is cross-eyed in the cut scenes. i don't know what that's all about, but that should have been fixed.

all in all, this is a game directed probably at the 11-15 year old crowd, but i had a good time with it. if you're looking for a sophisticated shooeter like COD:MW, or BioShock, this isn't it. nor should it be. but that doesn't make it a stupid or unworthy game. just take it for what it is. having said that, if this were a $[...] game, i'd give it four stars. but since it's overpriced, it's a solid three.

1.0 out of 5 stars GI Joe - Buggy Game - UI doesn't work, August 17, 2009
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
I wish I had a chance to see just how bad this game really was, but I can't even get passed the first Mission. Upon completion of the mission, I had to buy my first Joe (Heavy Duty). Unfortunately, this proved to be impossible, as none of the buttons would allow me to complete my purchase in the Team Roster. This was very aggrevating to say the least. Save yourself the money and buy something else more worthwhile.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ugly, Ugly . Ugly . Ugly......and dont buy this game, August 14, 2009
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
Never thought i will be playing a PS1 game on the PS3

The game is beyond bad. Im a huge fan of GI Joe and i tried really hard to give it a chance...but i can't, the game is horrible.

First, you control your character with only one analog, reminded me when i was playing old PS1 games with D-Pad no to mention the oudated graphics. There's no crosshair so you just shoot and run circles with the left stick to hopefully lock on another target. Camera angles can be really bad since you can't change angle (usually with the right analog) so sometimes you end up getting shoot at by ennemies in your blind spot. I had to give up on the game after 15 minutes, i couldnt take it anymome. I dont want that crap to ruin my childhood memories of GI Joe.

Voice acting seems to be made by [...] actor/actress like they were reading it on the script.

soooooooo......... dont buy this game .
