Product Description

  • Stores photos and videos like a standard memory card and fits in any SDHC-compatible digital camera
  • Wirelessly uploads your photos and videos via Wi-Fi to your computer or favorite sharing, printing, social networking or blogging web site.Even when your computer is off.
  • Uploads photos and videos wirelessly from over 10,000 Wi-Fi hotspots (1 year service included) across the nation.
  • Automatically adds geographic location information (geotags) so you can easily find and organize your memories.

How it Works

Geotagging

With Geotagging, your photos will be automatically labeled, or tagged, to show where they were taken. Today, tags make searching for photos easier and make sharing them more meaningful, but it's a time-consuming and manual process. With Eye-Fi's Geotagging service, you won't have to spend your time entering the info. It's done for you when you upload your photo.

Using its built-in Wi-Fi, the Eye-Fi card locates any surrounding Wi-Fi networks as you take pictures. Then, the Eye-Fi Service translates that data into geographic location and adds the information to each picture (in the EXIF data) as it is delivered to the web or your computer. It's as easy as that. You snap the shot and the photo shows up labeled with the place at which it was taken.

The coverage area is expanding all the time, as new Wi-Fi access points appear and as the location of those wireless networks are mapped and added to the system. Today, tens of millions of access points worldwide have been mapped, with extensive coverage in North America, Europe and Asia. Certain online photo sites already support geotagging and even have visualization tools that let you map your memories. Check out Flickr, Picasa and SmugMug to see what geotagging can do. Many desktop photo management programs also make good use of geotags as well, including Apple’s iLife ’09 (Mac), Adobe's Photoshop Elements 6 (PC), Google's Picasa (PC), Ovolabs Geophoto (Mac) and Microsoft's Pro Photo Tools (PC). Eye-Fi Explore includes unlimited Geotagging.

Hotspot Access

With Hotspot Access, you'll be able to upload from more than 10,000 Wayport Wi-Fi hotspots across the US just as easily as at home. You don't need to have your laptop with you or even have an account with the hotspot provider. Your photos will be delivered to your photo-sharing website and to your computer, even if it's thousands of miles away.

To make this possible and easy, Eye-Fi has worked directly with hotspot provider Wayport. Wayport offers Wi-Fi access at thousands of locations, including most McDonald's restaurants, major hotels, airports, and other locales. To see a map of all the locations in the US, click here.

An Eye-Fi card with Hotspot Access already includes access to Wayport hotspots. Simply walk into a Wayport location and turn on your camera. Your Eye-Fi Card will recognize the network, connect to it and start uploading your photos while you have a burger or wait for your flight.

If you want to be informed about your uploads, you can choose to receive status updates from Eye-Fi as either email or SMS messages. We'll let you know when you've connected to a supported hotspot network and are uploading and we'll let you know when your upload is finished. And, like all Eye-Fi uploads, if you leave the location before your upload is finished, it will pick up right where it left off the next time you're in a supported location.

Eye-Fi Explore includes 1 year of Wayport Hotspot Access. Eye-Fi Explore users will be able to renew Hotspot Access for $19 per year after the first year.

WebShare

With WebShare, your photos and videos can be automatically uploaded to your favorite sharing, printing, blogging or social networking website. No wasted time sitting in front of your computer. No fussing with upload software. No delay in sharing your new memories with friends and family.

Choose from among more than 20 of the most popular websites and some up-and-comers too. You can upload images privately and control if and when they are viewable by others. Many sites even let you edit your photo albums online. And, you can change your preferred upload site at any time.

You can even upload to the Web when your computer is turned off. We'll deliver them to your sharing site and then deliver them to your computer the next time you turn it on. The Eye-Fi Service is secure and encrypted, so your data and photos are safe and private.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works pretty well...., April 6, 2009
By D. Heyman (Bethesda, MD USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I got this card for two reasons, the geotagging and the ability to just turn your camera on and have all the pictures uploaded automatically.

The geotagging works when there are Wi-Fi signals nearby, as the card uses those signals and a database to identify where it is. This feature seems to work well with that limitation. My problem with the feature is that the geotagging only works though if you wirelessly upload the pictures. Which leads me to the second issue.

The wireless upload is exceptionally slow. You get no indication on your camera that the upload has started or if there are any problems. You can sign up for email, SMS or Twitter updates, but it would be nice to see this on the camera. The upload is very, very, very slow. I had 100 pictures and it took over 2 hours. My camera batteries depleted themselves twice during this process.

It would be much better if you could still use the included SD/USB adapter to upload your pictures and retain the geotagging information.

With a 4GB SD card only costing $15-20 these days, you are paying at least an $80 premium for the wireless uploading and geotagging. I wish those both worked a little better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Product - if your expectations are correct!, April 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Hi All,

I have been using EYE-FI cards for a long time and love the features that they offer. There is no easier way to take a picture/video and upload it to your computer from a wireless network (both in your home, office, or at wi-fi hotspots). They utilize Wayport Hotspot Access for outside of the home/office and Skyhook Wireless for Geotagging.

The cards have been offered, without video, in the 2gb model for a very long time and have been my personal favorites...however 2gb is just not enough sometimes...considering the umpteen numbers of mega-pixels these days. I was very excited when the 4gb came out and offered video to boot.

When I say expectations - as in the title of this review - you have to realize that this is a 3rd party tool that works in all Cameras that accept SD cards. That being said it does not have the ability to interface with your camera's screen to give you updates as to what it is doing and when it is uploading. There is a bit of blind faith required to know that it is working....and worst case scenario is that if it didnt make the upload, the picture is still on the card and can be removed normally via the sd card adapter. Also, the fact that this card has wireless on it and does support geotagging is an awesome feature that will allow any camera to become gps aware...yes you need to be in an area that has some sort of wi-fi so that it can find where you are. Its not a true geo-tag feature.

Battery life will be an issue for most of the people that buy this card. Why? Simple answer is that it uses your camera battery to power the wi-fi portion of the card when it is uploading to your computer. If your camera is set to super duper high quality then yes, images will take a while to transfer to your computer, they even take a while when connected via usb. Wireless is slower then connecting your camera to your computer - so you must anticipate a delay factor and battery usage.

The video upload feature is also amazing but you must realize that video files are much larger then images and will also be slow to transfer via wireless to your computer...they will also put some extra load on your camera's battery.

All that said, I believe that this card offers a unique feature set and for the extra cost is a viable method for shooting photos and video and getting them on your computer. Yes, you are paying a $80 premium for this functionality...but it is worth it if you are interested in the features that this card provides. Remember that it will also upload your photos to your favorite photo/video sharing site (flickr etc).

Eye-Fi has recently allowed the ability to maintain one account and multiple cards...so you are now able to have a number of cards linked to one account so that they all upload as per your settings.

Note: This card comes with one year of hotspot access included, however you can add the feature to any eye-fi card for $14.99 per year from their website.

5/5 in my opinion....please do comment and let me know if I can answer any questions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Product, Good for Certain Camera Users, BUT Make Sure You Know What To Expect, August 11, 2009
The main purpose that I bought this product is for its geotagging feature. However, the limits of its ability to geotag photos are not made clear, and required me to do some in depth research. It does not use GPS to geotag, but the skyhook network, and therefore it is necessary to be in range of wireless networks (thus, it would not geotag photos taken in Yosemite). ALSO, the geotagging data does not appear to be embedded in the photo on the memory card, because if the photos are uploaded to your computer via the camera or the included card reader, the geotag data is not attached to the photo. The only way to have the geotag data attached to the photo is to upload the photo wirelessly through the Eye-Fi browser interface. Once I realized this, I accepted that I had already purchased it and wanted to make the most of the card. However, it would behoove Eye-Fi to be MUCH MORE CLEAR AND PRECISE in its marketing of the product and statement of its capabilities.
The other, though less important, reason that I bought this card is because of its wireless upload capabilities. However, again, Eye-Fi does not make clear the specifics of how this is achieved, nor the limitations. Uploading from the card to either your computer or the web service of your choosing can occur in two ways: while you are in range of a network which you have pre-configured the card for with that network's credentials; or when in range of a Wayport access point (at a cost of $15 per year, 1st year is free with some Eye-Fi cards) or open networks. As it says on my Eye-Fi manager settings:

"Wayport, Inc. offers Internet access at over 10,000 retail locations, including McDonald's restaurants, hotels and airports. Open Networks offer free Internet access and do not require you to load a browser welcome screen. By enabling this option, you are allowing the card to search for and connect to these types of networks. When connected, your Eye-Fi card will securely upload your photos to your computer or online destination."

However, there is no indicator on your camera as to whether or not the card is able to connect to any given network or photos are being uploaded, without having your computer to check the Eye-Fi Manager software.

In conclusion, as long as you perform your due diligence and know what to expect when purchasing this card, it will greatly satisfy some users. For other users, it is not the right device.
