Editorial Reviews

Review

Rough & Tough offers brilliant blues in a wonderfully unlikely New York place: St Peter's Episcopal Church. Album circa 36 from John Hammond finds him on fire, absolutely solo, live, and superbly well-recorded. - Doug Spencer, Weekend Planet --Abc

Product Description

John Hammond's blues career has spanned the better part of the last five decades. From coffeehouses to concert halls, to festivals and beyond, Hammond emerged the ever-consummate blues man out of the great blues renaissance of the 60's. And while the 60's renaissance was largely an electric affair, Hammond has managed to keep vital the embodiment of the quintessential acoustic blues troubadour with brilliant acoustic guitar and rack harmonica playing and an impassioned voice. A Grammy Award winner and four time nominee, Hammond is also a multiple W.C. Handy award winner and has shared the stage and/or recorded with many of the masters, including Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker and Howlin' Wolf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blues from a church or how to use your acoustic guitar as a percussion instrument, April 27, 2009
By Christopher Bushman (Portland, OR USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Following up his excellent rockin' electric effort, Push Comes To Shove, 2009 finds Mr. Hammond alone in a NYC church with just his weathered voice, acoustic guitars, bottleneck slide and harp for the SACD Chesky Records release Rough & Tough.

The location was picked for its acoustics and the liner notes make much of the purity of the recording process. This is a stellar sounding recording of acoustic blues standards with a Tom Waits tune and a couple of Hammond originals thrown in. There is not a bum track here but on the first couple of listens, I particularly like the Muddy Waters tunes Still A Fool and I Can't Be Satisfied plus Get Behind The Mule from Tom Waits and the original Slick Crown Vic. The opener, My Mind Is Ramblin', sounds like the wheels are coming off. This is a good thing.

John Hammond is a national treasure and Rough & Tough is a great addition to the blues cannon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant recording by a master of his craft, May 6, 2009

Make no mistake, this is a five star recording. John Hammond's best (for my money) since the J.J. Cale-produced "Got Love If You Want It' twenty years ago.

To hear this master - accompanied only by his guitar and harp - playing 15 of the best songs in his canon is, in a word, thrilling. Astonishingly, John's voice in his 60s seems undiminished. And for one who's been with him all the way since the first Vanguard LP, his second take on "Chattanooga Choo Choo" is icing on the cake.

5.0 out of 5 stars John Hammond truly knows how to play the blues!!!, September 25, 2009
This new album is without a doubt the best album by him that I own,and I own about 15 albums of his. John Hammond has become a Blues master, and it must be age that does it. If your looking for true delta style acoustic blues then this is a must own . White man can't sing the blues ,(thats a bunch of crap) once you here John Hammond sing, that old saying is quickly forgotten. And sing and play guitar/harp he does like the true Idols he always loved.Standout tracks "Get Behind The Mule","Still a Fool","No Place To Go". Great Album !
