Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

"I could have sworn for sure we were canceled," a surprised Lt. Dangle (Thomas Lennon) greets the cameras in the season opener. Prophetic words. Comedy Central has since unceremoniously retired this veteran series, but happily not before revealing the origins of Dangle's short-shorts style and that the unfortunate Dep. Trudy Wiegel (Kerri Kenney-Silver) was once smoking hot. Reno 911! may not go out with guns blazing, but there are enough moments of truly inspired lunacy to warrant one last ride along with Wahoe County's funniest. There are two new faces on the force following the departures of ensemble members Wendi McLendon-Covey, Carlos Alazraqui, and Mary Birdsong (their characters are said to have perished in the taco stand explosion that ended season 5). Both have excellent priors. Joe Lo Truglio, as loose cannon Frank Rizzo, was a member of The State. Ian Roberts, as former Chicago cop Jack Declan, earned his stripes as a member of the Upright Citizens Brigade. Both characters are considerably more hardcore than their predecessors. Rizzo makes Denzel Washington from Training Day look like Sgt. Joe Friday. In one episode he relentlessly harasses the soccer coach who won't play his son. In another, he compels his new partner Dep. Jones (Cedric Yarbrough) to perform illicit and unprintable acts while undercover.

To its credit, Reno 911! did not mellow over its six-season run. It continued to brazenly cross the PC line with impunity, as witness the department's senior abuse PSAs and an encounter with an unrepentant teacher who has been having sex with one of her teenage students. The series enlisted some notable accomplices this season, including Rainn Wilson as a cunning serial killer with escalating demands (like watching Cold Mountain) before he will reveal where a body is buried, Jane Lynch as a couples therapist, George Lopez as Reno's mayor, who may have committed bigamy with a maniacal hooker, Jonah Hill as a terminated employee who will not go quietly, Patton Oswalt as a criminal extradited to Thailand, and Craig Robinson as a linoleum-floor pitchman. Dangle and company may be dumb, but they're not clueless, and after watching them suffer no end of humiliation, it's nice to also see them get the upper hand every once in awhile. In one episode, Junior (Robert Ben Garant) reveals how to crash an Italian wedding. In another, Dangle eggs on a hippie protester who has become a Reno tourist attraction. "Y'all can't be cops," a citizen protests at one point. "This must be a joke." Yes, it was a joke, and a great one while it lasted. --Donald Liebenson

5.0 out of 5 stars Plum Smuggler Spectacular, July 8, 2009

I would say that the show superceded my expectations that i had for this season when i found out Garcia, Clemmy, and Kimball weren't going to be on the show. I never had that many compliments about Kimball anyways. She was probably there to even out the F/M ratio. Sgt Declan and Frank Rizzo (not from Jerky Boys) were good replacements. I'm pretty sure that they both were on the show as appearances. Rizzo for sure, Declan not so sure. If he did than he definitely fits the epitome of a cop, embolisms and all, now that he's got some weight on em. Props for keeping Terry because without whom i wouldn't watch as religiously. Big Mike as well, who is revealed to be an ex Reno Sgt back in the 80's when Dangle actually wore some pant legs. Was a little disappointed that cheap Carl didn't make any episodes (the hamburger in the toaster really does say happy birthday!) and they should of had a little more Andrew. Overall the season rocked and am glad to see that it will probably be on for more seasons to come. Season 5 had me scared there for a little bit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely hilarious!!, July 3, 2009
By Amanda (Dallas, Texas) - See all my reviews

The crazy, absurd police officers of the Reno sheriff's department return for more wild antics in season six of Reno 911!, Comedy Central's popular mockumentary-style parody of law enforcement documentary shows, most specifically COPS. In this show, comic actors play the police officers and engage in a series of improvised (and absolutely absurd) sketches using a broad outline and minimally scripted material. The cops aren't real. The situations aren't real... but the laughs are definitely real.

At the beginning of season six, viewers are introduced to two new characters: Deputy Frank Rizzo (Joe Lo Truglio) and Sergeant Jack Declan (Ian Roberts), who were brought in to pick up the empty spots left by Deputy Sergeant Class II Clementine "Clemmie" Johnson (Wendi McLendon-Covey) and Deputy Cherisha Kimball (Mary Birdsong) after they were (supposedly) killed in the massive explosion at the end of season five. While it's easy to miss the fallen deputies, Frank and Jack are acceptable replacements who help inject new life into an aging series.

Rizzo and Declan are quickly inducted into the wacky, everyday occurrences in the lives of the Reno sheriff's department. From roller-skating prostitutes and serial killers to awkward dinner parties with exes and a "stoner Jesus," Reno's finest continue their eccentric adventures while refusing to shy away from "unacceptable" topics.

As in previous seasons, the all of the characters are brought to vivid, zany life by a funny funny cast with some of the best improvisation talent on television. Lieutenant Jim Dangle (Thomas Lennon) is particularly notable as the in-the-closet head of the Reno sheriff's department. This season also features guest appearances by Rachel Harris, Scott Thompson, George Lopez, and others.

This DVD set includes all 15 episodes of season six in their complete, politically incorrect and uncensored versions. The set also includes a collection of alternate and deleted scenes, hilarious extended outtakes, in-depth audio commentary from the cast members, and two profiles that introduce newcomers Deputy Frank Rizzo (Truglio) and Sergeant Jack Declan (Roberts).

While much of the humor here is highly juvenile and politically incorrect, it will send viewers rolling with their sides splitting open. Some sketches are incredibly dumb, while others will leave viewers cringing or even make viewers wonder why on earth they are laughing at something so indecent or inappropriate. Reno 911! is filled with the kind of humor that will offend any and every group on the face of the planet, make proponents of politically correct humor cry, and those with weak constitutions lose their lunches.

For viewers who can get past all of that, this series is absolutely hilarious. It hits nearly every taboo subject right on the head -- ranging from cultural slurs and stereotypes to highly adult content. While not every sketch is packed with laughs, each episode leaves something funny with viewers and will make them hungry for more Reno.

5.0 out of 5 stars and all that time I would have sworn they got cancelled..., August 15, 2009

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Reno 911! came back for season 6! Yes, I do regret the departure of "Clemmie" (Wendi McLendon-Covey), Deputy Kimball (Mary Birdsong) and Deputy James Garcia (Carlos Alazraqui); but this most recent season fills in the gaps with two new characters, Sergeant Jack Declan (Ian Roberts) and Deputy Frank Rizzo (Joe Lo Truglio). Believe me, these new characters and the funny situations they all get into keep things rockin' and rollin' on this 2 DVD set! Though this is not the very best season of Reno 911!; I wouldn't walk away from this. There are quite a few episodes that are extremely well done; and even the others that rely more on crude humor without quite as much energy still work well for light entertainment when you want to just kick back after a hard day's work and watch something good without having to think too much!

My favorite episodes include "Dangle's Murder Mystery: Parts 1 & 2" that boasts an outstanding, hilarious performance by all; "We Don't Want The Pope" in which the Reno Sheriff's department must deal with a potential visit from the Pope; "Getaway Trailer" which has Deputies Trudy Weigel and Frank Rizzo going for a wild ride and more inside a moving mobile home; "Viacom Grinch" which puts the Sheriff's Department on copyright infringement duty;--and, last but not least, "Weigel's Couples Therapy" in which Trudy finds a way to get more therapy coverage by bringing her "other half" to her counseling sessions.

In addition, some highly talented actors give terrific performances. Terry (Nick Swardson) now spells his name "Terrrry" and he seems to be forever violating his parole. In addition, Wanru Tseng continues her role as Cindy, a former $ex slave being reformed by the Reno Sheriff's Department. Patton Oswalt also makes a guest appearance as a man who confesses to a murder in Thailand--but what else does he have up his sleeve? Look for more several more funny supporting actors, too.

As other reviewers note, this season of Reno 911! continues to push (or even shred) the envelope, making sure that everything is as funny as possible although every so often the humor is crude. However, even when it's crude and inappropriate the whole thing still remains really funny. I've rarely, if ever, seen such a talented cast do improvisational comedy so well over time--and that goes triple for the core cast who have been on the show since it began: Robert Ben Garant; Kerri Kenney-Silver; Thomas Lennon; Niecy Nash and Cedric Yarbrough.

Overall, if you have enjoyed Reno 911! so far, this is definitely a "must-have" for your collection. It isn't quite as strong or funny as some of the other seasons have been but you won't be let down, either. Newcomers to the show may also want to add this to their collections if you like improvisational comedy from ingenious actors and spoofs of reality shows including, of course, "Cops."
