About the Artist

Putumayo World Music was established in 1993 to introduce people to the music of the world's cultures. The label grew out of Putumayo clothing company, founded by Dan Storper in 1975 and sold in 1997. Co-founder Michael Kraus joined Dan to launch Putumayo World Music and establish a non-traditional sales division. Putumayo World Music has become known primarily for its upbeat and melodic compilations of great international music characterized by the company's motto: "guaranteed to make you feel good!" Putumayo's CD covers feature the distinctive art of Nicola Heindl, whose colorful, folkloric style represents one of Putumayo's goals: to connect the traditional to the contemporary. This summer, Putumayo Kids celebrates the joys of eating with a brand new, globe-trotting CD from their award-winning children's Playground series. Picnic Playground provides a veritable feast of international songs about food, cooking and healthy eating in a global gumbo of musical styles and languages. American artist Jay Mankita's opening song "Eat Like a Rainbow" sets the tone for the album, and the delectable songs that follow from Australia, Cuba, Denmark, France, Germany, Canada and Trinidad add to the exuberant musical smörgåsbord.These fun, upbeat songs will help get kids moving and dancing to the rhythms. The artists on Picnic Playground sing so joyously about delicious food that you can almost taste it. Try Jose Conde's wonderful "Bolitas de Arroz con Pollo," chomp your way through Rhythm Child's "Bowl of Cherries" and taste the tropical flavors of Asheba's Caribbean "Ice Cream." Before you go, finish off the picnic with milk and cookies, courtesy of Donikkl's song "Milch" and Maggie G's "Let's Bake Cookies".

Picnic Playground includes liner notes in three languages, English, French and Spanish, a child-friendly overview of the foods mentioned in the songs, as well as two recipes showing how to "Eat Like A Rainbow" by child nutritionist Barbara Storper, founder of FoodPlay. A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of Picnic Playground will be donated to Vitamin Angels, providing essential nutrients to children in the U.S. and around the world.

The theme of a brand new music CD for children from Putumayo Kids are songs about food, cooking and healthy eating. Drawing from Australia, Cuba, Denmark, France, German, Canada, Trinidad, South Africa, and the USA, "Picnic Playground" offers a toe-tapping internationally oriented entertainment that will engage the attention and appreciation of children. A flawless technical production, this CD features twelve entertaining compositions that include Eat Like a Rainbow; Mes Parents Sant Bio; Bolitas de Arroz con Pollo; Ice Cream; Goutez-les; Peberpelikan; Beautiful Day; Bowl of Cherries; Pomodora; shoo fly Pie; Let's Bake Cookies; and Milch. Unique, original, thoroughly 'kid friendly', and enthusiastically recommended for family, preschool, elementary school, and community library CD music collections, "Picnic Playground" features liner notes in English, Spanish and French.

The latest in Putumayo's always-fun series of "Playground" CDs for kids, Picnic Playground contains 12 multi-lingual songs about food (with a bent towards learning to eat healthy and supporting natural foods).

None of the artists are "big names" (but the liner notes will lead you to the albums the tracks were taken from) but they are all kid-oriented. Five of the songs have English lyrics (because the artist is from the US, Canada or other English-speaking countries like Trinidad). For the rest there is a brief explanation of the songs' subjects but no English translation.

All the songs were new to me except the 1920s hit "Shoo Fly Pie (and Apple Pan Dowdy)" and "Bowl of Cherries" - which is the old field workers song "Pick a Bale of Cotton" with the word "cherries" being substituted for "cotton".

There are songs about milk, ice cream, cookies and tomatoes as well as encourages kids to eat naturally colorful fruits and veggies. 1% of the proceeds will be donated by Putumayo to Vitamin Angels - a non-profit.

While this isn't my favorite "Playground" CD (World Playground is still hard to top for repeat playing), this disc is a nice addition to the growing collection which expands kids music beyond the cultural borders of the US.

This CD is really good. My kids and I both love it. All of the songs are good. We dance around the kitchen to it.
