Great, but not their best, August 25, 2009
I just got the new Skillet cd Awake, in the mail yesterday. A day early since I preordered. Well, I remember now why I don't buy cds when they first come out or preorder. As soon as I got it and gave it a listen, I got onto amazon to see what others had too say about the cd. And what do I find? There is a Deluxe edition of the new cd with 3 bonus songs. The preorder, on the Skillet website, did not give that option and you can't purchase 2 of the bonus songs as mp3 downloads. The only way to get them is to buy the whole album again. Now I am a huge Skillet fan and in no am I trying to take this out on them. It is most likely a marketing scheme to get more money.
"Revision: OK, I found that you can buy the 3 bonus tracks on the panheads website. Since I got a free membership with my pre-order I was able to purchase the tracks."
On to the actual review...
OK, enough ranting about that. The cd was actually very good. It is not their best cd. I am still a big fan of Collide. Comatose was also better. But, it is definitely a great cd. More of a continuation of their last without the orchestration. Skillet has always been known to change their style up a bit on each new release. But maybe they found what works for them. And it is good. I just am more partial to the heavier sound of their last two albums. I really do enjoy the addition of Jen's vocals. That adds a nice touch to the overall sound that is Skillet. Well, I look forward to whatever they put out next and as always... Keep Rockin' for Jesus!!

Not their best, and a little disappointed!, August 27, 2009
When skillet posed songs prior to their cd release, they posted 2 of the 4-5 good songs from the cd. This gave be the illusion that the cd was full of powerful rock songs. When i got the cd, i started to like a few more songs, but i just can not enjoy the slower songs this album offers. I guess if you liked songs like "say goodbye" and "last night" on comatose, you will proably have not problem with this album.
On a second note, i preorderd this cd, and there was no mention of a deluxe cd at the time, a very cheap move on skillet's part. There are not legal downloads for the songs that should have came with the pre order in the first place. This is a very heartless move on someone's part. However, i preordered from a site other then the skillet one, and i got my cd a day before the release, and i revieced a free t-shirt so i cannot complain. However without this deal, i would definately be wishing i had waited for the cd proce to go down. I would probably buy this cd for about 5 dollars used before shipping.

A good listen, but..., August 26, 2009
To be perfectly honest I was a bit disappointed by this album. I've been a Skillet fan since way back. I've had all their albums including this one. Unfortunately this seemed a bit lacking.
But first the positive.
In my opinion this CD is one of Skillet's best musically. One of the things that I have disliked about a large portion of Christian music is that it is immediately identifiable as soon as it starts. I'm not entirely certain why this is, but whatever that quality is, it has made Christian rock less enjoyable for me than secular. Skillet seems able to get past this barrier. I have really enjoyed the sound of this album.
On the flip side:
Lyrically this album seemed weak at best. One of the things that I have so enjoyed about Skillet is that their songs regarding God and our relationship with Him have challenged me in a personal way, and given me a better understanding of myself and Him. The songs that talk about relationships and life have really had a depth to them that has expressed some things that I think call out to every listener. I think they lost both of those in this album. I know that some will criticize me for this opinion, but I think that the reason this bothered me was because I have higher expectations of Skillet than some other bands because of how excellent their lyrics have been.
To summarize: If you are looking for an excellent CD to listen to and enjoy then Awake is a great choice. From that perspective I highly recommend it. If you are expecting something that has the same lyrical quality that they've had in previous albums, then I'd suggest picking and choosing specific songs rather than just getting the whole album.
