"Good Luck, Yukikaze" picks up where the first book left off. Rei Fukai is in a coma, and he will be eventually assigned to fly the new Mave fighter - Yukikaze in a new body. As stated in my review of the previous book, the novel delves into more detail then the anime series. If you have seen the anime series and found some of it confusing, reading this book will clear things up. At some point the writing can be a little dry, but it gives details which will become important plot points. If you enjoyed the Gonzo/Bandai anime series "YUKIKAZE", this book, and the previous one "Yukikaze" are essentials.

Bought this as soon as could after reading the first one. Story picks up directly after the ending as the war with the JAM heats up into overdrive. To make matters even more interesting the FAF and SAF are no longer true allies but rivals. The JAM see this as an oppurtinity to try and make alliance with the factions involved. The virtual nature of the Jam makes warfare not just about firepower. Captain Fukai seems to sum it up that its all about survival-the SAF can only survive by not fighting the way its expected to. Very good books but needs a third story as this one ends on cliffhanger-does the SAF win? Does Rei and Yukikaze survive? And the real goal- fall back to earth or fight everyone else?

Not as much awesome fighter porn as the first novel. That is likely to be a real deal-breaker for 99% of the readers considering picking this book up. There is quite a bit of interesting philosophical and cognitive science ruminating, and some interesting ideas are explored regarding human nature, machine intelligence, the combination of both, and whatever the JAM are. But it was such a slog. I think the problem is the translation, as I am fairly sure the long boring bits would have been shorter and more interesting in Japanese, but it may be that you just cannot do a good job of accurately translating AND catching the authentic feel of this type of Japanese novel. There are some interesting twists and turns, and some very interesting ideas. For example, there is an interesting progression from the first book, which introduces the humans of Faery, their machine intelligences, and the JAM. And this book does some interesting things with the combination of these various beings. But it ends abruptly, and I cannot imagine there will be a translation of the third and final novel.

This is a good sequel to Yukikaze, and goes to some very interesting places while exploring the relationship between the dysfunctional people of the Faery Air Force, their self-aware computers, and the alien JAM. My only complaint would be that the ending feels like it was cut short.
