By K. Harris HALL OF FAMETOP 100 REVIEWER on August 7, 2012
Format: DVD
Quick Take: Essentially, this is half a season for half the price. A non-sale, non-discounted price of 19.95 fits in line with almost six hours worth of DVD content. A full season, had it been released that way, would simply have doubled the asking price.

Last year, History and A&E Television made the dubious decision to start releasing Volumes of their most popular shows as opposed to Seasons. I was one of the most vocal opponents of this move and some of my scathing tirades can be found on those initial releases. In truth, though, I have nothing against the idea of volume releases (especially for shows that aren't held together by continuing plot threads) as long as three things are clear:

1) They need to be priced according to content and no more expensive individually than a season set would be.
2) Don't start releasing Full Seasons and then switch tactics mid-stream to confuse unsuspecting buyers.
3) If it isn't a season, all content needs to be disclosed on the DVD packaging so the consumer knows what they are getting!

Last year, many of these early Volume releases broke my second and third rule. I mean really! How can you release a DVD when it's not a full season and NOT tell buyers how many and which episodes are included? Absolutely unforgivable. I need that information to decide whether or not I want to purchase the set. As we have progressed, though, and the notion that we're to continue with Volume releasing has stayed with us, the point becomes rather more muddy. Now, we're past the second issue and the third issue has been corrected. All of these Volume releases now contain information about the content. So, there is no deception and no confusion. You get "x" number of episodes for "x" price. It's now up to you whether or not it's worth it.

I have the HDX 8.9" and really love this show. Being a Prime member, I especially enjoy getting certain seasons for free. Anyway, content wise the show is wonderful. It's always entertaining because you never know what someone is bringing in. Picturewise, the picture is excellent in HD. This is just a great investment in your entertainment.

This might be Vegas, but damn. Seriously? You're going to sell something that was proven to be worth over $100,000, for only $12,000. I understand 'hard ship' and 'needing money now' but the ones that were proven to have something really valuable, weren't in that way, by their words, and could of easily taken it to auction and gotten what it was worth, if not more. But instead they "settle" for less after they said they wouldn't. ...Unless there are *a lot* of stupid people out there, that just throw their money anywhere it'll land.. seriously. why a pawn shop and not an auction..

By season 2, you just know the guy Rick is reading from what the producers have given him (or he alone) from Wikipedia. There were a couple of episodes in that season alone, that I actually knew he read verbatim what Wikipedia had written, because it was the subject of Abraham Lincoln and as it so happens, I read that exact misinformation in Wikipedia before myself. Since then, in the upper seasons, his information had been corrected/changed about Abe (he even states in one episode "I was told wrong before" and stammers after saying that) . . . . which proved my point, that they were getting some, if not most, of their information via Wikipedia. *sigh* whatever. Everyone can't be smart all the time, but damn, stay away from Wikipedia. Get a real encyclopedia.

I digress... As the seasons roll on (starting pretty much late in season 3), you can bluntly tell that the people are sent in to "pawn or sell" the items because the items are way too out there; that no one in their right mind would sell that at a pawn shop. There has to be a lot of editing going on, if these people are real off the street people.

When I read the title, I thought how exciting could a show about a pawn shop be? I gave it a try and from the first episode I watched, I was hooked. The one feature that keeps me coming back is that you can never guess what item someone is going to bring to the store to sell. I am constantly amazed at what I see. Everything from a Civil War cannon to a modern day Lamborghini. Unlike other shows, whose storylines can get dull and predictable; Pawn Stars keeps you interested by providing a sense of anticipation about what that next "treasure" coming through the door will be.

I really enjoy this series! I call it one of my casual shows because I can put it on while I do stuff around the house like laundry and don't have to pay too much attention too it. I love to see all the strange stuff and try and I guess what they will offer for it. plus the history about things is cool too so you might learns something cool. Some moments are really staged but not too cheesy, I understand it's TV. Season 5 is great becasue it's tons of episodes so I feel I got a great value!
