OK, just so you know, I'm a HUGE fan of both 1950s science-fiction movies, as well as modern-day "homages" or parodies. Also a big fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000; so when I saw the listing for Atomic Brain Invasion, (and subsequently checked out the trailer on YouTube) I got pretty darn excited - it's exactly what it appears to be - a low-budget, but surprisingly well-produced take on those wonderful films of the Fifties. Starting off with a hammy introduction (a la "Plan 9 From Outer Space [Blu-ray]") by an earnest, redundant "scientist" on grainy black and white film, the movie switches to color, and introduces us to all the stock players who populate these kinds of films: the nerdy, intelligent kid; the girl who secretly loves him; the bully/jock (who harbors his own secret passion), the clueless townsfolk, and the HOO-RAH Army General, all of whose lives are altered forever when not one, but TWO alien devices crash to earth. Add to the mix a credible Elvis impersonator (with requisite rock-a-billy musical number thrown in), and you've got a great send-up of every teen monster pic from "The Blob (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]" to "Mars Needs Women".

Best of all, the production values (for an independent picture) are surprisingly high - special effects are cheesy but fit the genre; the direction and acting are all as good as you'd find in other, similar pictures (see:

Yes, B~Movie-Within-A-Movie Fans, grab your girl and head on down to the Malt Shop at 5th and Nowhere Street. Elvis is coming to sing his Rock-A-Billy heart out-but first must stop those slimy, icky, dangerously hilarious Atomic Brain Creatures! Do not let the cover fool you: It is NOT as GRAPHIC as it appears. More slimy, drippy oozy than gory. Besides, the romp 'N stomp dance number will distract you and make you roll over with laughter at the zany proceedings! The Movie Sp00F is out to pay tribute to every B~Movie Horror/Sci-Fi Movie it can cram in! So curl that lip, Elvis! It's time to get all shook up as the Atomic Brain Invaders come to a Town near you!

I can't get enough of these Grade B (Cult Classic) Movies. This one ranks with the Troma Series and The Incredible Melting Man. Great to laugh with and unwind!!!

"Atomic Brain Invasion" is a loving tribute to the golden days of 1950s sci-fi. Like many of the movies it pays homage to, this one was made on a shoestring budget, though unlike most of those original movies, this one was made in Rhode Island. The film reminded of "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra" in tone (which is a huge compliment) as it manages to be affectionate to those crazy old B-movies without being disrespectful or going for the cheap laughs. The film revolves around a plot to protect Elvis Presley from alien kidnappers, and along the way explains that aliens sank the 'Titanic' and even presents a musical homage to Robert Shaw from a UFO enthusiast. All this ground and much more is covered in this pop-culture intensive little gem. While I particularly love the brain monsters and the peanut butter and banana sandwich references, any fan of early science fiction movies, and certainly MST3K fans will all find something to enjoy here. There are a lot of bad sci-fi parodies on the market, but this is one that's actually worth checking out.

Seeing this film over and over again, year after year, I find it never grows over-familiar. It plays like a favorite musical album; the more I know it, the more I like it. The black-and-white cinematography has not aged as color would. The dialogue is so spare and cynical it has not grown old-fashioned. Much of the emotional effect of Atomic Brain Invasion is achieved by indirection; as we leave the theater, we are absolutely convinced that the only thing keeping the world from going crazy is that the government is protecting us.

Movies like this are not merely difficult to make at all, but almost impossible to make well. The technical difficulties are so daunting that it’s a wonder when the filmmakers are also able to bring the drama and history into proportion. I found myself convinced by both story and saga.

To watch it, is to experience steadily mounting delight, as you realize the filmmakers have taken enormous risks, and gotten away with them.

A true Masterpiece.

This is a wild and crazy movie! So many characters, all of them funny; and so many different things going on. Love the smooth, velvety voice of the Elvis impersonator. He sounds better than the real one! You might have to watch it more than once to catch
on, but it's great.
