Noble V: Greylancer, originally released in Japan in 2011 as Another Vampire Hunter: The Noble Greylancer, is a new take on the familiar Vampire Hunter D series. Set approximately 5000 years before the original novel series, Noble V presents a world where the Nobles still rule over humanity with an iron fist, while simultaneously dealing with internal conspiracies and a war of attrition against devious invaders from the stars.

It retains much of what makes the VHD series fun to read: dramatic battles, strange creatures, and a bizarre blend of dark fantasy and pulpy science fiction. Lances are swung at the speed of sound, futuristic weapons rend holes in the space-time continuum, and the shape-shifting OSB (Outer Space Beings) rain stakes and iron blades down on the vampiric Nobility from intergalactic warships.

Greylancer, more anti-hero than protagonist, is a very different character from the now-familiar D. A renowned warrior and the overseer of the Northen Frontier, it is his duty to protect its human citizens while keeping them in their place. Though he occasionally shows hints of compassion, he is largely disinterested in human beings and will strike them down with chilling brutality, and is no kinder to his fellow Nobles. Holding the will of the Sacred Ancestor above all, he kills any who stand in his way.

Long-time fans of the franchise will no doubt enjoy seeing the history of this strange world further fleshed out, and will relish cameo appearances by several of the Nobles who were slain by D in the main series, including fan-favorite Mayerling (originally appearing in

I have read books in the Vampire Hunter D series, and liked this story. Its a prequel of sorts that begins to chart the downfall of the advanced vampire civilization (the reason: a war of Vampires vs. Space Aliens, I'm not making this up!). The story for me, about the vampire hero, overseer Greylancer, did not disappoint. Its a quick read, pulp fictiony, filled with action, just like the Vampire Hunter D stories, so fans of this series will probably enjoy this novel.

What did disappoint was the complete lack of illustrations, and this where I rated it down. This novel was originally published in Japan with gorgeous illustrations, which did not make it over to the English translation. Why did the publisher go this route? I don't know, but considering all the other novels in the Vampire Hunter D series still have their illustrations included, it seems kind of blasphemous to omit them. (Also, its a translation of a Japanese "light novel," these traditionally have illustrations included in them...to leave them out seems kind of cheap).

This glimpse into the Nobles' past was a lot better than I initially expected. Foreshadowing for some of the events in the Vampire Hunter D books makes this story a true prequel. I recommend this for any fan of the series. Newcomers to the Vampire Hunter D legend won't fully appreciate the references. Well worth the money.

Great prequel novel to Vampire Hunter D Series by same author, Hideyuki Kikuchi. The story provides background to the history of the Nobles and Graylancer. Stark and violent at times as you would expect from the master of Japanese manga fiction. If you appreciate a good story in the world of Vampire Hunter D, then you must read this book..

For those of us who are hardcore fans of the world of Vampire Hunter D, this tale allows a precursor featuring a character almost as deep, definitely as powerful. I look forward to continuing my reading on this new series.
