Contamination is not a good movie. It's not silly or bad enough to be enjoyable as a cheesy camp curio, nor is it written, directed or performed well enough to be taken seriously (though it tries). It has its moments, mostly in the first act as the New York setting and crazy gore provide some 80's style thrills and some neat effects. The movie quickly travels to South America and the quality descends quickly at the same time. Long scenes of talking with poor dialog are everywhere, as is an endless scene where a character is locked in with the enemy but nothing happens for what feels like 10 minutes. For super die-hard sci-fi fans there is some stuff here to enjoy, but there are many other Italian knock-offs to look at before this one, not to mention all the classics from Hollywood or the UK.

If you're die-hard enough to collect this piece of 80's sci-fi horror however you will be rewarded with an amazing disc from Arrow Video. Arrow has been doing collectors editions of horror and exploitation films in the UK for years and almost all of them are worth getting a multi-region player for. Now they're slowly starting to release some stuff like Contamination in the US, and it's just as good as their other discs. The film looks fully restored (because it was) and you'll be quite happy with how modern and film-like the transfer is. The audio also sounds clear and crisp, which is great since the synth-rock score is one of the best parts of this film.

Extras aren't super long but like a Criterion release all of them are very worthwhile.

"What else do you want to know about me? How many times a week I screw?"

Just released from Arrow Films is the low budget Italian sci fi film Contamination (aka Alien Contamination, Toxic Spawn or the director's choice Alien Arrives on Earth) directed by Luigi Cozzi, who previously helmed Star Crash with Caroline Munro (Maniac), Joe Spinell and a 26 year old David Hasselhoff. He also directed the giallo The Killer Must Kill Again and a couple Lou Ferrigno Hercules films! I had seen this film a couple times before and each time I liked it a little more so I definitely wanted to give it another shot.

Contamination begins with a bunch of eggs from outer space that mysteriously appear on a ship with a dead crew. These aren't just any eggs though! Oh no! These suckers pulsate until they pop and spray liquid which causes its victim's chests to explode. Ian McCulloch (the one from Zombi Holocaust and Fulci's Zombie, not the one from Echo and the Bunnymen) plays Commander Ian Hubbard, an ex-Astronaut who might know the secret to these eggs. He joins one of the men who found the eggs and a correspondent from the White House to stop whomever is behind the deadly plot to use these eggs to destroy the human race...or whatever.

Contamination is an unashamed Alien ripoff that moves the setting (due to budget restraints) to Earth. What the film didnt skimp on though is gore. Believe me when I tell you the exploding people in this film are INCREDIBLE!!! So nasty and gory. The story is silly, acting and dubbing appropriately hammy and the "reveal" at the end of the film is laugh out loud absurd. With all that said I Loved this film! I can't think of a movie that I've watched recently that was more watchable and entertaining.

Guys I feel weird saying this, but I like Contamination better than I like the original Alien. That’s a bold statement. I can’t fully explain except that the original Alien is clearly the scarier movie, but as some of you may know, entertainment is what I crave. I don’t necessarily need to be scared to enjoy a picture and between some of the most fun splatter effects of any early 80’s picture, Ian McCullouch in the lead and Cozzi in the director seat as well as Goblin’s score setting the mood. This is what Italian Horror is all about. Taking a proven concept and then making it just fun as Hell. Arrow Video is releasing Contamination in an amazing package, available in the US and UK, breaking the chains of its Video Nasty status.

Let’s talk about the extras for a minute. It includes newly translated subtitles (typically there’s a reason for the new translation though I’m not familiar with the specifics off-hand). The disc includes commentary from Fango editor, Chris Alexander who has been making the rounds to do commentaries and intros for all your favorite Italian and Euro Horror classics. Some of you balk at that idea because you haven’t been into Fangoria for years, but I can assure you that Alexander knows his stuff. His editorials on Italian Horror and his commentary always provide insight into the release and display the kind of passion that you’d want in a fan commentary. I may not always enjoy popular horror sites, but I do enjoy Fangoria because they have strong leadership in Chris Alexander (even if we disagree at times). Alexander also wrote the editorial for the accompanying booklet. Beyond that you get an archived making of featurette with director Cozzi as well as an in depth look back at one of the Italian master’s careers.
