Mirror Sword and Shadow Prince is based on the Japanese legend of Yamato Takeru, but like any good retelling, no prior knowledge is required to enjoy a fresh take on the tale.

The story focuses on Toko of the Tachibana clan and her adopted brother, Oguna, who was discovered as an infant floating down the river in a reed basket. Young Toko is Oguna's protector, defending him against village bullies and encouraging him to become strong. But when Oguna is taken to the imperial city to be trained as a body-double for the heir to the throne, his mysterious origins are revealed, and he becomes a helpless puppet to the emperor's schemes. With Oguna overtaken by a power too great for him to control, it is his childhood friend Toko who must find a way to save him and stop him from destroying everything they cherish.

As in Dragon Sword and Wind Child, Noriko Ogiwara strongly grasps and conveys psychological truths. In addition, her writing has matured; she has maintained her eye for beauty while developing a concise and sparing style that delivers action deftly and moves plot fluidly along (perhaps thanks in no small part to the translator). In her debut novel Dragon Sword, Ogiwara's characterization (especially of secondary characters) was a bit wanting; this is no longer the case. The cast of Mirror Sword and Shadow Prince, while all spiritual likenesses of their Dragon Sword counterparts, are dynamic and palpable. I also appreciate that aside from having a very admirable heroine, this novel boasts many strong and complex females that support one another -- a noticeable improvement from its prequel.

This story goes at breakneck speed - in the thrilling sort of way, which cannot really be said for the first book, "Dragon Sword and Wind Child." Don't get me wrong though! The first book was also an extremely satisfying read, but this second book in the trilogy has thrown me for a loop. If I thought I learned a lot of valuable lessons, this story delved much deeper. Noriko Ogiwara really outdid herself on this one, and many thanks to Cathy Hirano who was able to bring the original content to life. Still emotional and incredibly lush, Ms. Ogiwara's writing has also introduced a humorous side that was not quite present in her first book. Where the first one presented more reserved characters - every colorful, multi-faceted character in this novel leaves deep imprints in your mind and heart.

"Mirror Sword and Shadow Prince" centers around Toko and Oguna, who both grew up together in Mino. When Oguna was a baby, he was abandoned and it was Toko's mother who found and took him in. But no matter how much his adoptive family loved him, he was still an outsider within the Tachibana clan. One day, Oguna's given the chance to go to Mohoroba and learn how to become the Crown Prince's shadow. He and Toko make a promise to meet again, but years go by and war ravages the land under the power of the Sword. Possessed by the destructive force of the Dragon Sword, which was once wielded by the Wind Child, Oguna is faced with a terrifying fate that rapidly ushers him towards a certain death. Toko must go on her own journey to collect the five remaining magatama and form the legendary Misumaru of Death, the only power capable of opposing Oguna and the Sword. Only then will Toko have the power to save - or destroy him.

What I love about this book is how the characters developed from children to man and woman. Even the "bad guys" have some dimensions. You can't help but feel some pity for them. This book is better than the first book because the characters are constantly on the move and the situations keep changing. It flows better and felt less restrained. It is a beautiful novel with so much attention to details. Since it is a big book, a Kindle version would have been nice but I would have missed out on the wonderful illustrations.
