The Good:

+The story starts off engaging
+Really engaging and complex battle system
+A really good music score

The Bad:

-The story begins with engagement but isn't always coherent
-The characters are also not as well developed
-For the most part, the remastered presentation is severely lacking

It's hard to believe now, but once upon a time Final Fantasy was a name that was revered in gaming. No fan can quite point to when the decline began, but one thing is for certain, in the Post Final Fantasy XIII world, Final Fantasy doesn't resonate the way it once did. The release of a Final Fantasy used to be something to be excited about, now each one is meant with skepticism. Final Fantasy Type-0 tries a new approach with Final Fantasy. And this is a good thing... I'm just not sure the PS4 was really the way to experience it.

As most know by now, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is a reissue of a PSP game originally released in 2011. It is a way to sort of try and rebrand Final Fantasy and re-imagine it. When a game advertises itself by saying it's now "mature" it's usually the first instinct that the game will be anything but (if you have to draw attention to it, you're still a work in progress, sorry). Here Type-0 tries to skirt that with it's incredibly powerful opening moments that show, immediately, this isn't the Final Fantasy we all grew up with. In the beginning we get a great big prologue about a nation named Orience that is under attack. The enemy has employed a crystal jammer which keeps the citizens of Orience from using magic, easily allowing the city to be overtaken.

A lot of people have found themselves being shocked at the brutality that we've seen in this iteration of Final Fantasy which is a really impressive HD port from a PSP game. By now everyone has seen the dying chocobo and his rider but compare it to the simple brutality of war from Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy VI’s slaughter of the Rebels to the Magitek Empire, or even Sin’s destruction in Final Fantasy X and honestly this game is pretty much for par on that note.

Having waited almost ten years now, players are finally able to play the second of the originally announced games at E3 just about a decade ago. Having been out in Japan for the longest time, North America has finally been able to get their hands on a localized version both on the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. Having fully revamped the system from the original PSP system the changes are clear to see in a lot of cases from the smoothness of the combat systems to the multiple character models. Being a lot to move over, there are some cases in which the graphics haven’t exactly fully transitioned which can be seen in several NPCs that aren’t important to the overall. It might seem like a minor detail, but when everything else looks so gorgeous it does seem to take some of it away.

Type-0 finds players within the Final Fantasy XIII realm of stories with the L'Cie and the Crystals being the central focus. Unlike the mother ship title however, the L'Cie are not the main leads but are instead powerful protectors of the crystals. This was quite a change from the seemingly powerless people struggling against their unwanted fate.

Once you get the hang of the controls the game is loads of fun. At first I thought this game was gonna suck because the controls and camera were harsh. Picking up Phantoma is still a pain because it's bound to the same button as attack (stupid) so a lot of times you end up attacking when you want to pick harvest items from your kill and you only have 10 seconds to do so. I have gotten better at it though. You know the funny thing though, is that people are complaining about the Order 1886 having a ton of cut scenes.. dude really... this game has LOADS of cut scenes, but it doesn't really bother me, gives me time to get into the plot.

Positives:
Fun immersive gameplay
Fast paced action with some violence (nice change for a FF game)

Negative:
Graphics even at high def aren't great but it's to be expected from a PSP remaster (not a remake)
Camera angles suck
They don't cover much of what the La'cie is so if you haven't played FF13, you sorta are wondering what the heck.

Man. This is a TOUGH game to review, because it's hard to be wholly objective about it. Anyone who has watched Square-Enix for the past few years (especially when it comes to the FF franchise) knows that they've made some bewildering decisions which have largely alienated their North American fanbase... repeatedly and unapologetically. This game was originally a game for the Sony PSP, and when it was released in Japan it was well-received and people seemed to really dig it. Over here in North America we were all like: "MAN that looks AWESOME! I want to play it!". And SE was all like: "Okay! America wants to play Final Fantasy Type-0! I think that we should no.". And so we all say around with our wallets open, waving Franklins, but still SE refused to bring the game overseas. There was even a fan translation (which I believe SE went out of it's way to shut down?). PEOPLE WANTED THIS GAME. HARD.

The PSP sputtered it's last few breaths (although everyone who had one still has one and still plays on it- both in Japan and in the States) and the PS Vita was born. Everyone's initial reaction was like: "This is a really cool system and NOW they'll bring Type-0 over!". And SE proudly was like: "Yes! America would like to having Final Fantasy Type-0. We will create another game for Miss Lightning. OKAY!". So we all went back to sulking and trying to figure out why the heck they wouldn't just release the game over here- all the while reading articles about how it was a mature Final Fantasy entry dealing with the harsh realities of war... and it had blood!!! WHAT?!? Wow!

So a few MORE years went by. By this point the Vita had gone through a new, slim incarnation and the PS4 was well established.
