To all the horror fans out there, my (1) star is only due to the ridiculous new release by Anchor Bay -- not the film itself, which always is a lot of fun to watch. As a horror film collector and enthusiast, I sent the following to Anchor Bay this morning upon comparing my old DVD to the new release whereby the picture is virtually the same:

Greetings Anchor Bay,

As one of the pioneers of re-releasing classic or otherwise alternative horror (Evil Dead packaging, new transfers on many films, new releases, etc.), I was looking forward to the Blu Ray of Silent Night, Deadly Night as an upgrade to the DVD I had purchased years ago. I thought I was going to get at least three things:

1. New transfer from original interpositive and/or at least clean-up on the "original unrated" footage. With technology today, the "unrated" footage could easily be cleaned up even if there wasn't another source. At least color correction, brightness, adjustment of contrast, etc.

2. The original trailer. It exists, isn't hard to find and certainly is what kicked off the initial firestorm.

3. Original new interviews. It's not like the film was chock full of A-listers who would never do interviews here.

Sadly, I got none of the three. The only extra being the commentary track with four guys who couldn't care less about the movie sans moderator who could have breathed new life into it.

Given Anchor's stellar record, I want to know why nothing was done here, albeit slapping a "30th Anniversary Edition" across the top to coax folks like me into buying it when my old DVD was perfectly fine. Even correcting the unrated footage alone (or an attempt) would have been fine.Read more ›

This is a review of the product, not the film itself. I absolutely love this film. But for whatever reason, every time this film is released, its screwed up in some way.

As someone else stated, the film looks upscaled from the DVD. I'd never expect something like this from Anchor Bay, but its true. And once again, the inserted uncut shots are not color corrected to match the rest of the film. The clips stand out so dramatically that its distracting. They have a yellowish brown tinge to them that can be easily removed. This film should look amazing. but it absolutely doesn't.

As for features: Why does one of the most controversial slasher films of the era always gets jipped on the special features? The trailer that started the controversy isn't even on the DVD or the Blu. Whats the issue here? its out there, I've seen it. Do your homework! For the blu ray, they bring over the unauthorized audio interview with Charles Sellier. In several interviews before his death, Sellier stated that he had no idea that this interview would have ever been used on a DVD (it was recorded by a Fangoria writer for an article). The whole thing was done behind his back. He also states he was never contacted by Anchor Bay to have any involvement in the DVD release. How does something like this happen? They get a commentary track for the sequel which is despised by so many, but not the original?

Also, why does this Blu not have any interviews with cast or crew? Lilyan Chauvin was interviewed in the documentary "Going to Pieces" regarding this film, so she was certainly up for it, at least before she passed when the DVD was released. You're telling me they couldn't find a single damn person to talk about this film? Pathetic. Its not like Linea Quigley is terribly busy.Read more ›
