Space Dandy is one of the most fun animes that I've seen in years, but more importantly it never takes itself seriously, which makes for a very entertaining experience each time. For those who have never seen this show it's about a bounty hunter in space who searches for new alien life for registration, but Dandy almost always fails at this. Furthermore, that's one of the aspects I like most about this series. Secondly, Space Dandy is episodic, which means that each episode is basically its own story that doesn't rely on the last episode to continue the story. That being said it makes the show feel uniquely different each episode, but I can also see how some might find this method of story telling inconsistent. It's almost like you get a different version of Dandy each episode, so in that way I don't agree that Space Dandy is inconsistent.

Reasons why I love this series:

    1. Space Dandy is a parody of Fan Service Anime, Sci-fi, and especially Space Operas.
    2. The music is excellent that's basically a combination of Jazz, Techno, and Pop music, which adds a lot of personality to the series.
    3. The sidekick character QT is one big joke on technology and Siri from the iPhone.
    4. The animation is awesome with lots of breathtaking environments and colors.
    5. The characters are very likable, and have unique personalities that makes the show great.
    6. Lastly, It has a ton of Pop Culture references in it, but what I liked most about these references was that the show not only makes fun of them, but also pays tribute to them at the same time.

Space Dandy: Season One is presented in 1080p with Dolby TrueHD 2.0 audio.

Season one has the first 13 episodes on it, and the only difference between this set and the Amazon Exclusive is that the Amazon Exclusive has a hat and a few extras, But the blu-Ray box is the same. There's no special packaging in the Amazon exclusive.

The Amazon exclusive edition is kind of overpriced, and I feel that the $70 MSRP on this edition is a bit high - but the current $49.99 price is reasonable - so pick it up now in pre-order. The set includes 2 Blu-Ray, 2 DVD and has 13 episodes - running a little less than $4 per episode at the current Amazon.com price. (5 and a half bucks per episode at the regular MSRP)

But that being said, the series itself warrants a review, and since I have seen the entire first season (on Hulu Plus for free with my paid subscription), I feel that I have some things to offer.

First of all, this is the guy that created Cowboy Bebop. Yes, Shinichiro Watanabe. But in making this series he stated (in a printed interview I read in Otaku USA) that he made Cowboy Bebop 90% serious and 10% comedy and wanted to change his next project to 90% silly and 10% serious.

Yoko Kanno has contributed a couple of songs, but Watanabe relies on a variety of composers: his one rule, no musical instruments invented after 1980-something (can't remember the exact year).

The series has a lot of silly, slapstick comedy, gratuitous fan service, and a lot of nostalgia. It is a modern version of the classic 70s and 80s Japanese space opera anime series. There is also some speculation that Dandy is based on Andy from Bebop (even the name is very similar).

Each episode is a gag filled pulp style funhouse romp and each episode 'resets' the series. So a lot of the characters die in various ways, but each new episode is a reset. Of course there are events which transpire which remain, such as the meeting of various principle characters - but death is never final for these guys.
